So, that’s what the legendary Skullcrag Incursion mentioned earlier does: it was the Fusion Spell Card of the Deck.
Valstorm the Skullcrag King is basically the Backrow protectorthat many Decks have received this Year.
Interestingly, unlike the Ritual branch, the Fusion branch of Defiant Soul could fit into any Zombie Deck.
The core strategy relies on Sopla to recover key targets like Souffraes (and its Ritual upgrade) and Specter. Specter is essential for reviving either Souffraes (to enable its Ritual Spell) or Souffraruda (for protection), before Specter is Tributed to summon Gaigust or Mordone, simultaneously filling the Graveyard for Incursion or Gaigust. Skullcrag Incursion is a valuable generic Spell for Zombie Decks, providing access to a boss monster (almost always Valstorm since Enigmatic Princess isn’t as strong), backrow clearance (since Zombies usually need to be Normal Summoned and are vulnerable to summon traps), and vital GY recursion for otherwise unrecoverable monsters like Lichy, Rituals, and Mordone. This backrow protection is key for safeguarding cards like Bone Spine Whip, or in Necromaid, the Ritual Spells.
While Valstorm is easy to summon thanks to Incursion, it is ultimately mediocre due to its 2500 ATK, and vulnerability to battle, destruction, and flip effects, especially since its Level 8 or lower immunity is increasingly irrelevant in modern play.
Man, Valstorm’s effect would actually go pretty hard with Rush’s truly forgotten mechanic: Equips. Giving equips protection while also letting those equips buff Val’s lackluster 2500 ATK would be pretty nice.
Incursion is surprisingly generic. Even outside a Zombie deck it can be used to clear backrow with fairly minimal investment. Using zombies as an engine just gives it even more value. Def gonna putz around with it a bit!
Cool cards.
