“If Doomcaliber Knight is on the field when Sangan is Tributed to Normal Summon Mobius the Frost Monarch, how are their effects applied?”
Q: If Sangan is Tributed to Normal Summon of Mobius the Frost Monarch while Doomcaliber Knight is face-up on the field, the effects of Sangan and Mobius the Frost Monarch activate once the Normal Summon is successful, but when does the effect of Doomcaliber Knight activate, and which effect does it negate?
A: If you activate the effect of Mobius the Frost Monarch that was Tribute Summoned by Tributing Sangan, the effects of Mobius the Frost Monarch and Sangan activate at the same time. Therefore, the mandatory effect of Sangan is Chain Link 1, and the optional effect of Mobius the Frost Monarch is Chain Link 2. Afterward, the effect of Doomcaliber Knight activates as Chain Link 3.
If you create a Chain like the one above, the effect of Mobius the Frost Monarch at Chain Link 2 has its activation negated by Doomcaliber Knight, which was directly chained to it, while the effect of Sangan at Chain Link 1 is applied normally.
Similarly, if any of the following monsters are in the Monster Zone instead of Doomcaliber Knight, the activation/effect of Mobius the Frost Monarch at Chain Link 2 is negated, and the effect of Sangan at Chain Link 1 is applied normally.
– Light and Darkness Dragonlord
– Light and Darkness Dragon
– Number 23: Lancelot, Dark Knight of the Underworld
– Number C106: Giant Red Hand
– Gogogo Golem – Golden Form
“If the effect of Magical Meltdown is applying, is the activation of Future Fusion negated?”
Q: In the following situations while the effect of my Magical Meltdown is applying, what happens if my opponent chains the effect of Cosmic Blazar Dragon?
(A) I activate the card Future Fusion.
(B) I activate the effect of Future Fusion, “During your 1st Standby Phase after this card’s activation: Show 1 Fusion Monster in your Extra Deck and send the Fusion Materials listed on it from your Main Deck to the GY.”
(C) I activate the effect of Future Fusion, “During your 2nd Standby Phase after this card’s activation: Fusion Summon 1 Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck with the same name as the monster you showed, and target it with this card.”
A: The activation of the card Future Fusion and the activation of its first effect are not considered effects that include a Fusion Summon, so their activation can be negated.
(A) and (B) The activation of Future Fusion and the activation of its first effect are negated, and Future Fusion is destroyed.
(C) The activated effect of Cosmic Blazar Dragon is not applied, so the second effect of Future Fusion is applied as written. (The second effect of Future Fusion is one that includes a Fusion Summon, so its activation is not negated due to the effect of Magical Meltdown.)
The following are also examples of cards with effects that prevent the activation of Fusion Summoning effects from being negated:
– Branded Lost
– Dragonroid
“If the effects of Sergeant Electro are negated, can the targeted Spell/Trap Card be activated?”
Q: If Sergeant Electro activates its effect, and then afterward its effects are negated by Skill Drain, can the targeted card be activated?
A: Yes, it can be activated. Afterward, if Skill Drain leaves the field and the effects of Sergeant Electro are no longer negated, the targeted card once again cannot be activated.
The same applies to the first effect of Soul of Silvermountain.
“Does the effect of Slifer the Sky Dragon activate when a monster that was Special Summoned in Defense Position is changed to Attack Position by the effect of Final Attack Orders?”
Q: If my opponent Special Summons a monster in Defense Position while the effect of Final Attack Orders is applying, that monster is immediately changed to Attack Position, but does the effect of my Slifer the Sky Dragon activate?
A: Since the opponent’s monster was Special Summoned in Defense Position, the effect of Slifer the Sky Dragon does not activate.
“If the effect of Summon Limit is applying and I have already Summoned once that turn, can I activate Advanced Heraldry Art?”
Q: While the effect of Summon Limit is applying, which means neither player can Summon more than two times per turn, if I have already Summoned once that turn, can I activate Advanced Heraldry Art?
Also, if I activate Advanced Heraldry Art during a turn I have already Summoned once, but Summon Limit is chained to the activation, what happens?
A: If the effect of Summon Limit is applying, you cannot activate Advanced Heraldry Art during a turn you have already Summoned once.
Also, if you activate Advanced Heraldry Art during a turn you have already Summoned once, but Summon Limit is chained to the activation, only the part of the effect of Advanced Heraldry Art that Special Summons the 2 targeted monsters is applied. (The part of the effect that performs an Xyz Summon using both monsters is not applied.)
The same applies to the following cards regarding whether they can be activated while the effect of Summon Limit is applying and you have already Summoned once, if Summon Limit is chained to their activation and you have already Summoned once, or if the effect of El Shaddoll Winda is applying when resolving their effects:
Synchro Summoning effects
– Speedroid Ohajikid
– Performapal Odd-Eyes Synchron
– Performapal Miss Director
– Crystron Citree
– Crystron Rion
– Mathmech Superfactorial (first “●” effect)
– Synchro Call
– Junk Anchor
– Melffy Pinny
– Hop Ear Squadron
Xyz Summoning effects
– Geargia Change
– Mathmech Superfactorial (second “●” effect)
– Shining Hope Road
– Pendulum Xyz
– Halfway to Forever
– Numbers Last Hope
“How do I count the number of Spells activated for Spellbook of Judgment?”
Q: In the following situations, do the Spells activated count toward “the number of Spell Cards activated after this card’s resolution” for Spellbook of Judgment?
(A) The activation of a Spell is negated by Magic Jammer, etc.
(B) The effect of an activated Spell is negated by Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, etc.
(C) A Field Spell is activated using the effect of Metaverse.
(D) The effect of a Spell that is already face-up on the field or in the GY is activated.
A: If the activation of a Spell Card is not negated, but only the effect is negated, or if the Spell Card is activated using another effect, it counts toward “the number of Spell Cards activated”.
If the activation of the Spell Card is negated, or if the effect of a Spell Card is activated but isn’t the activation of the card itself, it does not count toward “the number of Spell Cards activated”.
(B) and (C) It counts.
(A) and (D) It does not count.
The same applies when counting the “number of “Sky Striker” Spell Cards you activated this turn while this card was face-up on your field” for the second effect of Sky Striker Mecha Modules – Multirole.
“If the effects of Assault Blackwing – Kunai the Drizzle are negated, is it still treated as a Tuner?”
Q: If Assault Blackwing – Kunai the Drizzle is Special Summoned using its own effect while the effect of Skill Drain is applying, will it still be treated as a Tuner? Also, if Assault Blackwing – Kunai the Drizzle is Special Summoned using its effect, and then Skill Drain is activated and negates its effects, what happens?
A: In either case, its effects are negated but it is still treated as a Tuner.
The same applies if you Special Summon the following monsters by their own effects:
– Infernoble Knight – Renaud
– Rose Princess
“If Photon Emperor treated as an Xyz Material is sent to the GY, can I activate its “If this card is sent to the GY, except from the field” effect?”
Q: If Photon Emperor is an Xyz Material and is detached and sent to the GY, or if the Xyz Monster it is attached to is destroyed and sent to the GY, can I activate its effect that Special Summons it?
A: Yes, you can. The first effect of Photon Emperor can be activated if it is sent to the GY, except when it is sent from the field to the GY. Cards that become Xyz Materials are not treated as cards on the field (they do not exist on the field as cards).
Therefore, if a card treated as an Xyz Material is sent to the GY, that card was not sent from the field to the GY. In this scenario, if Photon Emperor is an Xyz Material and is sent to the GY, it is treated as being “sent to the GY, except from the field”.
The same applies when the following cards that are treated as Xyz Material are detached and sent to the GY:
– Tainted of the Tistina
– Ryzeal Mass Driver
NEW ENTRIES
“What happens if Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo is revealed by the effect of Cyber Jar?”
Q: The effect of Cyber Jar is activated during my turn, so after all monsters on the field were destroyed, I revealed the top 5 cards of my Deck first. If Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo is among the 5 revealed cards, and I Special Summoned it in face-up Attack Position, what happens to the Level 4 or lower monsters my opponent reveals?
A: Your opponent will Special Summon their Level 4 or lower monsters in face-up Attack Position or face-down Defense Position, as written in the text.
The turn player Special Summons their monsters first before their opponent, but since they are both considered to be done simultaneously, the Continuous Effect of Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo is not taken into consideration.
“Can I reveal Odd-Eyes Arcray Dragon using the effect of Fusion Conscription?”
Q: Can I reveal Odd-Eyes Arcray Dragon in my Extra Deck with the effect of Fusion Conscription?
A: No, you cannot. When choosing a monster from your Deck or GY to add to your hand with the effect of Fusion Conscription, only the revealed Fusion Monster’s Fusion Material line of text can be referenced. (The same also applies to Fusion Armament.)
The text listing the Fusion Materials for Odd-Eyes Arcray Dragon states “4 Dragon monsters (1 Fusion, 1 Synchro, 1 Xyz, and 1 Pendulum)”, and does not list any specific card names, so you cannot reveal Odd-Eyes Arcray Dragon with the effect of Fusion Conscription.
“If I reveal Azamina using the effect of Fusion Armament, which monster can I Special Summon?”
Q: If I activate Fusion Armament and reveal Azamina in my Extra Deck, which monsters can I Special Summon?
A: You will Special Summon a Queen Azamina from your GY. When choosing a monster from your Extra Deck or GY to Special Summon with the effect of Fusion Armament, only the revealed Fusion Monster’s Fusion Material line of text can be referenced. (The same also applies to Fusion Conscription and Fusion Deployment.)
The text listing the Fusion Materials for Azamina states “”Queen Azamina” + 1 Fusion or Synchro Monster”, and the only Fusion Material specifically named is Queen Azamina, so you cannot Special Summon a Fusion or Synchro Monster, or Saint Azamina.
“If I reveal Saint Azamina using the effect of Fusion Tag, can I Tribute the targeted monster to Special Summon Azamina from my Extra Deck?”
Q: If I reveal Saint Azamina using the effect of Fusion Tag, can I Tribute the targeted monster and 1 face-up monster my opponent controls to Special Summon Azamina from my Extra Deck?
A: Yes, you can. The Special Summon of Azamina using the method written in its text is not a Fusion Summon, but the Tributed monsters are treated as Fusion Materials.
“If I have no monsters in my GY, can I send Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders to the GY to activate the effect of Chasmatis, Dragon Ruler of Auroras?”
Q: If I have no monsters in my GY, can I send Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders to the GY to activate the effect of Chasmatis, Dragon Ruler of Auroras, which becomes the same effect as the sent monster’s effect activated by discarding itself?
A: No, you cannot. Since no monsters in your GY can be targeted, you cannot send Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders to the GY or detach an Xyz Material as cost.
“Can I activate Advanced Heraldry Art by targeting Heraldic Beast Gryphon, and Xyz Summon Number 69: Heraldry Crest?”
Q: Can I activate Advanced Heraldry Art by targeting Heraldic Beast Gryphon and Heraldic Beast Stad Whale in the following scenarios?
(A) Only Number 69: Heraldry Crest is in my Extra Deck.
(B) Number 69: Heraldry Crest and Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch are both in my Extra Deck.
A:
(A) You cannot activate Advanced Heraldry Art.
(B) You can activate Advanced Heraldry Art and Xyz Summon Number 69: Heraldry Crest.
Even if you activate Advanced Heraldry Art by targeting Heraldic Beast Gryphon, you must have at least 1 monster in your Extra Deck that could be Xyz Summoned without applying the effect “This card can be treated as 2 materials for the Xyz Summon of a “Number” Xyz Monster that requires 3 or more materials” of Heraldic Beast Gryphon.
“When the first effect of Chasmatis, Dragon Ruler of Auroras is activated, can the effects of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Tearlaments Rulkallos, or Stardust Dragon be chained?”
Q:
(A) If I send Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms or Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls from my Deck to the GY to activate the effect of Chasmatis, Dragon Ruler of Auroras, can the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring be chained?
(B) If my opponent sends Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders from their Deck to the GY to activate the effect of Chasmatis, Dragon Ruler of Auroras, can I chain the effect of Tearlaments Rulkallos?
(C) If I send Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos from my Deck to the GY to activate the effect of Chasmatis, Dragon Ruler of Auroras, can the effect of Stardust Dragon be chained?
A: None of these effects can be chained. The effect of Chasmatis, Dragon Ruler of Auroras “becomes that sent monster’s effect that activates by discarding itself”, so it is not considered an effect that adds a card from the Deck to the hand, sends a card from the Deck to the GY, Special Summons a monster, or destroys a card on the field.
“If a card’s name is changed, can its effect that states “You can only use the effect of [this card’s name] once per turn” be activated twice per turn or more?”
Q: I activated and resolved the second effect of Lovely Labrynth of the Silver Castle, which Sets a Normal Trap Card from my GY. During that turn, if I Special Summoned a second Lovely Labrynth of the Silver Castle, but the effect of Number 69: Heraldry Crest – Dark Matter Demolition or Heraldry Flash is applied to it so that its name becomes “Unknown”, can I activate its effect again?
A: You cannot activate it again. Even though the name of Lovely Labrynth of the Silver Castle was changed, you already used the effect “You can target 1 Normal Trap in your GY; Set it to your field, but it cannot be activated unless you control a Fiend monster”, so you cannot activate it again that turn. The same would also apply to the third effect of Lovely Labrynth of the Silver Castle.
“If the effects of Dark Magician Girl the Magician’s Apprentice are negated, what happens to its card name?”
Q: If Dark Magician Girl the Magician’s Apprentice is Special Summoned using its own effect while the effect of Skill Drain is applying, what happens to its card name? Also, if Dark Magician Girl the Magician’s Apprentice is Special Summoned using its effect, and then Skill Drain is activated and applied, what happens to its card name?
A: In either case, its effects are negated, but its name remains “Dark Magician Girl”.
Similarly, if an Appliancer Copybokkle that was Special Summoned by its own effect has its effects negated, it will still have the same name as the targeted monster until the End Phase.
“When an effect is activated targeting Argostars – Lightning Tydeu in the Monster Zone, and its effect is chained to place it in the Spell & Trap Zone, will the targeting effect apply?”
Q:
(A) When my opponent activates Raigeki Break targeting an Argostars – Lightning Tydeu that has been Special Summoned to my Monster Zone, if I chain the “●” effect of that Argostars – Lightning Tydeu and place it face-up in my Spell & Trap Zone, will it still be destroyed?
(B) When my opponent activates the third effect of Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames targeting an Argostars – Lightning Tydeu that has been Special Summoned to my Monster Zone, if I chain the “●” effect of that Argostars – Lightning Tydeu and place it face-up in my Spell & Trap Zone, will it still be destroyed?
A:
(A) After Argostars – Lightning Tydeu is placed in the Spell & Trap Zone, it is destroyed.
(B) After Argostars – Lightning Tydeu is placed in the Spell & Trap Zone, it is not destroyed. The effect of Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames destroys the targeted monsters, so the targeted card must still be a monster when the effect resolves. Once Argostars – Lightning Tydeu is placed in the Spell & Trap Zone, it is no longer treated as a monster, so it is not destroyed.
The same applies to the following cards:
– Argostars – Slayer Eteo
– Argostars – Swift Capane
“When declaring a card name with a card such as Dirge of the Lost Dragon, can I declare “Unknown”?”
Q: If there is a monster on the field whose card name is treated as “Unknown” due to the effects of Number 69: Heraldry Crest – Dark Matter Demolition or Heraldry Flash, can I declare the name “Unknown” when activating Dirge of the Lost Dragon? Also, if there are no monsters on the field treated as “Unknown”, can I declare the name “Unknown” when activating Dirge of the Lost Dragon?
A: You cannot declare “Unknown” in either case.
The same applies to the following cards, and you cannot declare “Unknown” as a card name:
– Psi-Blocker
– Ma’at
– Gishki Diviner
– Engraver of the Mark
– The Suppression Pluto
– Alsei, the Sylvan High Protector
– Akashic Magician
– Goddess Urd’s Verdict
– The True Name
– Archfiend’s Oath
– D.D. Designator
– Lullaby of Obedience
– Exosister Carpedivem
– Sales Ban
– Prohibition
– The Black Goat Laughs
– Mind Crush
– Gravekeeper’s Trap
“When resolving Gordian Schneider, what happens if some of the targeted cards are no longer present?”
Q: I activate Gordian Schneider, targeting 2 cards my opponent controls. If one of the targeted cards leaves the field due to a chained effect, what happens?
A: Since only 1 of the targeted cards remains, banish either 1 card from your hand or 6 cards from your Extra Deck, face-down. Afterward, the remaining targeted card your opponent controls is returned to the hand. (Even if some of the targeted cards are no longer present, the effect is applied to the remaining targeted cards.)
RULING REVERSALS
Ruling changes that have occurred this month:
January 23: Slifer the Sky Dragon
Old Ruling: If a monster is Special Summoned to your opponent’s field in Defense Position while the effect of Final Attack Orders is applying, so that the monster is immediately changed to Attack Position, the effect of your Slifer the Sky Dragon will activate.
New Ruling: If a monster is Special Summoned to your opponent’s field in Defense Position while the effect of Final Attack Orders is applying, so that the monster is immediately changed to Attack Position, the effect of your Slifer the Sky Dragon will not activate.
