Strategic Summary:
Welcome back for another off-cycle CDP, this time featuring the new Genex cards from the Terminal World set! The Genex archetype has had three different primary subthemes over the years, basic Genex, R-Genex, and Genex Ally, but they all had one thing in common: struggles. While they had breakout stars, such as Genex Undine and Genex Ally Birdman, the theme didn’t have a cohesive gameplan… until they received an Ultimate Offering in Monster form! That’s right, I’m talking about Repaired Genex Controller (YGOrg Translation), their new LINK-1 monster. When summoned, it recovers a Genex monster from your GY, but more importantly, whenever a Genex is added to your hand, except by drawing, you can activate its effect to Normal Summon a Genex monster. This works extremely well with Undine and Birdman, but it also works particularly well with the R-Genex subtheme, as R-Genex Magma, R-Genex Turbo, and R-Genex Crusher all tutor a R-Genex monster on summon. Same can be said for Genex Power Planner, giving you a near endless loop of Normal Summons. Once your board is full, you can even use Birdman to bounce a Genex back to hand, restarting your summoning chain. If you’re wondering what to do with all those monsters, look no further than Synchros. I’m going to start with the big new boss monster, Arms of Genex Return Zero (YGOrg Translation), which is a Level 10 Synchro that, similar to Accesscode Talker, can banish monsters of each Attribute from your GY during the turn, except Zero negates activated monster effects. Additionally, it can shuffle up to 6 Genex monsters with different Attributes back into your deck to destroy S/T cards on the field.
With all that destructive potential comes great responsibility, but this theme doesn’t just summon Genex Synchros – it can summon any Synchro monster, as long as you use a Genex as the Tuner. As you’ll see in the replays, I dip into a wide variety of powerful Synchros, such as Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier, Ancient Fairy Dragon, Baronne de Fleur, and more. To augment these Synchro monsters, I also elected to run The Crimson Dragon, the Level 12 Synchro Monster that can faux-Synchro Summon during your opponent’s turn, letting you get to some of the more challenging monsters to summon such as Black-Winged Assault Dragon. It also doesn’t hurt that the Synchro Rumble you tutor can be used to bring back a Genex Tuner for more Synchro Summons! This also means that the deck can effectively loop Synchro Monsters for either Synchro World or T.G. Hyper Librarian, keeping your options open and your field full of powerful bosses. But even if your Synchro loops start to run low as your fill up your board, there’s one last Genex trick to keep the Repaired Genex Controller combos going – R-Genex Undine (YGOrg Translation). This Level 4 Monster can become a Tuner, but it also can recover itself and another Genex monster from your GY. Just be careful, once you do, all cards that would otherwise be sent to the GY the rest of the turn are banished instead!
Hope you enjoy this display of Synchro passion from the Genex archetype! As one final note, I did my best to showcase a variety of different combo lines available to the theme in the replays, so be sure to watch each one for different inspiration!
