Strategic Summary:
Welcome back for today’s profile, this time featuring the iconic Dark Magician. As with any other beloved card from the anime, Dark Magician has received countless waves of legacy support over the years, building out its options and giving it quite an assortment of potential plays. The difficulty as a deckbuilder now is choosing what to limit and cut-out of a deck using it, and that’s exactly the challenge I had building the strategy before you today. So let’s talk about what did make the cut. On the Ritual Side of the deck, Advanced Ritual Art, Preparation of Rites, and Secrets of Dark Magic were included to support both Illusion of Chaos and Magician of Chaos, as both are worthy contenders on their own, as well as useful Fusion Material for Master of Chaos. On the Fusion side of the deck, I’m using Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon, typically made with Dark Magician and any Bystial monster, as well as The Dark Magicians, Dark Magician the Dragon Knight, and the newest Fusion, Dark Magician the Knight of Dragon Magic. All of these Fusion monsters are enabled through three vectors: Timeaeus, the United Dragon, which can Fusion Summon using its monster effect as long as you include a Spellcaster, Magicalized Fusion, using materials from your field or GY, or the aforementioned Secrets of Dark Magic.
Now you might be asking, why Bystial monsters? While Branded Regained definitely works well to counteract attempts to banish your Dark Magician monsters, it also serves as the ideal Spell to send to the GY with Magicians’ Souls, as Branded Beast will return it back to the field each End Phase. It also offers itself up as another target, to redirect your opponent’s removal away from Eternal Soul. The other reason is that they are a ton of Level 6 Dragons that are easily Special Summoned, themselves well to use in Fusion Summons while also applying pressure even if you don’t have access to a Fusion Spell. However your cast your Spells, the rest of the deck supports all of these strategies through its wide tutoring and great draw power, backed by the strength of its Fusion bosses. Channel your inner Yugi-magic with the help of the Dark Magician!
