It’s a crime that the Heraldry Beast Fish monster, is not a Shark. Would be a fun nod to the plot line from Zexal.

Erasing the names of your opponent’s monsters is a very cool concept. Wonder if it’s been done before.

      • Pablod on December 12, 2024 10:55 pm

Apparently, it’s a new Effect. A new innovative way for Negate.

      • mslabo102 on December 13, 2024 12:43 am

It was in Genom-Heritage’s anime effect and Amnesia from Arc-V anime. This is the first time for IRL cards.

      • Hitback on December 13, 2024 8:49 am

It’s not completely new mechanically, Genex Ally Remote could change the names of any player’s tuner, as could the Cipher Dragons (though they also stole the target). The applications are new, though, “Unknown” is not a real card name, and it’s used for disrpution rather than combo plays.

    4. Pablod on December 12, 2024 10:58 pm

Basically, this new Heraldic Beasts is focused on applying memory/identity erasure similar to what Vetrix did in the Anime: why these cards change the Monsters’ Names to “Unknown”.

      • NARFNra on December 13, 2024 1:28 am

It’s also an effect Genom-Heritage had and used to win duels in the Anime.

All that lock for a dragostapelia tier boss monster lmfao.

    6. N on December 12, 2024 11:04 pm

These are cute and all but these won’t really be meta. But I like the idea of using Gryphon for the Rank 4 toolbox.
Anyway Ruka confirmed for the third anime theme at Jump Festa.

    7. Ddd on December 12, 2024 11:11 pm

Pablod. It is not new. Angelica’s ring and magician’s hard negate when the effect resolves, but I believe that it only applies to spells. I believe that twin Pegasus saber functions the sake way despite not mentioning anything about the effect resolving

      • Assassino Nuclear 216 on December 15, 2024 10:49 am

Negates on res is not what’s new. Ryzeal ,utopia and others did before it. It’s the way It’s doing it that’s new.

    8. EmeraldTiger on December 12, 2024 11:13 pm

New Xyz based on 69’s alternate forms was a pretty obvious route to take for future support. I’m really happy to see the name-nullifying effect that Number 8 had in the anime finally made its way into the real game. Any kind of archetypal-specific or name specific support, and Extra Deck monsters that need archetypal or specifically named materials, will not enjoy being victim to that effect. It has a lot of potential for interesting interactions.

This too, comes not long after we’ve received the first real OCG/TCG monster to treat itself as multiple Xyz Materials. A lot of effects most thought to be relegated to the anime for good are slowly but surely cropping up in the real game. If this keeps up, maybe we can get actual Rank to Level converting cards.

      • CornParade on December 13, 2024 5:24 am

Xiangke Magician already does Rank to Level conversion.

      • thebaseddd2 on December 13, 2024 6:24 am

@ CornParade not enough, we still need Xyz Crown and uhh, Gimmick Puppet Nightmare did nothing wrong! Though if it was treated as 2 mats that would be counterproductive (pun intended) for Destiny Leo.

      • Beep on December 13, 2024 4:22 pm

@CornParade not really. Xiangke’s OCG/TCG effect was watered down so it’s only a “conversion” for the purpose of xyz summoning. The original effect in the anime was a full on conversion, which would’ve been a LOT more novel and opened the door to fun effect combos.

Still mad they took Rank 0 away from us.

How is this going to work with HOPT effects?

This effect of [Card name] can only be activated once per turn. <- Do we treat all instance of a self-referential card name in the text too as unknown, if so, is the Snake Eyes Ash that became Unknown the same Unknown as the Flamberge on the field, and would consuming its HOPT mean that Flamberge's HOPT now doesn't work too?

There's a few ways to work this:

      1. Each Unknown is a unique Unknown to the card, and changes the card's text so that HOPT is preserved, but since all of them are Unknown, a HOPT activated on one of them will restrict all of their effects.

      2. Unknown is treated as a separate card, so a card changed to Unknown can activate its effect, get negated, but then the card that it originally was can also be played and activates its effect because it isn't Unknown. Meaning you can activate a HOPT twice per turn, once on the original, once on Unknown.

Man even typing this out I can think of so many ruling problems this will create. Just going to wait for the rules update that will come with this.

      • EmeraldTiger on December 12, 2024 11:55 pm

Actually really hope it’s the former, not only because that fits intuition better (if two things have the same name, then references to that name should logically work the same across them) but that also gives another level of disruption to such cards. Imagine hitting multiple HOPT effect monsters with identity theft and forcing your opponent to choose between which one’s effect to use.

      • Giant Turtle Who Feeds On Dames on December 13, 2024 12:06 am

HOPT clauses refer directly to the effect itself, and only mention the card name for the sake of it. You cannot use HOPT effects more than once in a turn, even if a monster’s name changes. There are already many monsters that change their own names and carry Q&As about this stuff that you can easily read on the translated DB, such as Phantom of Chaos.

      • Mr. Bulbmin on December 13, 2024 12:23 am

Or, even worse, HOPT effects literally cannot activate while a card is “Unknown”.

That card isn’t “Diabellstar the Black Witch”! It’s “Unknown”! You can’t use “Unknown” to activate the effect of “Diabellstar the Black Witch!”

    13. HFIL on December 12, 2024 11:51 pm

Heraldics were definitely not on my bingo card. Also, changing their names is a really interesting effect that will absolutely give judges PTSD from the ruling’s nightmares.

      • Leofwin on December 13, 2024 6:58 am

I’m actually not surprised at all to see new heraldics. Number 18 was one of the very, very few good targets to dump with Ext Ryzeal and could already get some somewhat interesting stuff going before if you were willing to play some bricks. I was already wondering if that would mean they’ll receive more support.

    14. Giant Turtle Who Feeds On Dames on December 13, 2024 12:10 am

This is so cute, but it’s a bit of a shame that they’ve moved somewhat towards the trend of delineating archetypes by mentioning cards instead of possessing a text string in their name. “Unknown” can still mention Shining Sarcophagus or whatever

      • EmeraldTiger on December 13, 2024 12:14 am

I mean, I’d argue that’s a good thing card-design wise. On the aesthetic grounds, it means that series of cards can be grouped together without needing to put in a specific text string, which offers more freedom in card naming. For gameplay, it also means those types of “archetypes” will be unaffected by name changes, and it’s interesting to have a mix of themes that are both vulnerable to, and resistant, to name changing.

      • Murdermajig on December 13, 2024 1:49 am

Except the 2 main deck monsters lock you into Heraldic Beast materials because then Time Thief-Ryzeal-Heraldic would become either tier 1 or tier 0

      • MaxumumBlade on December 13, 2024 6:58 am

Murdermajig had to test a bit but you can in fact play the two together. With a small package of just
3 bonfire, 3 Ext, 1 Node, 1 Cross, 1 Plugin, Duo Drive, Detonator, and Aggregator. With 3 Gryphon, 3 Whale, 2 Leo, 2 Flash, 2-3 Charged-Up, Zenmaister, Number 18, and Number 69s. For 21-22 main deck slots
Ending on negated Duo Drive 1 mat, Detonator 3 mat (not negated flipped with Zenmaister effect), maybe negated Zenmaister, Shatter Stream, Leo, and Flash. That’s Cross monster negate on res using Duo, Detonator up to 3 pops or protects plus 1 face-up negate, Shatter Stream on field monster negate into Dark Matter Demolition on field monster negate combined with Flash for a field negate.
The starters are Ext/Bonfire and Gryphon/Whale just start as a normal ryzeal combo then go into your heraldic afterwards to play around the locks.

      • MaxumumBlade on December 13, 2024 7:26 am

Forgot to include this interaction: Ext send Heraldry Patriarch instead of Aggregator, Send Leo plus Gryphon add Whale gets the same end board but no Aggregator negate or random Leo on field. So It has a 1 card combo version as well.

I feel like making a card nameless is an extremely cool and unique gimmick. It’s so great it should have been the focus of an entire archtype instead of just a one off thing. Also nice to see more obscure xexal dicks getting support, maybe that person who wants Umbral Horror support is going to get their wish someday.

      • Joshua Seed on December 13, 2024 1:36 am

There was a card called Amnesia used in Arc V by Yuya in ep 32 and the card effect was targeting one card on field and change it’s name to Amnesia. I don’t know if it will ever be printed but it definitely had a unique effect even by anime standards.

      • thebaseddd2 on December 13, 2024 6:31 am

Many such cases! Heroics didn’t retain their focus on living on the edge of 500 LP until their latest support.

    19. NARFNra on December 13, 2024 1:33 am

Hey, these are really cool – they managed to finally avenge Genome-Heritor losing its anime effect that wins a duel, and also made the weird extra versions of Heraldry Crest that are supposed to negate everything on the field. There’s a lot of kind of goofy ways to use them too, God Rage isn’t HOPT and is a Number Monster you can cheat out with effs like Utopia Dragonar or something. I don’t think it’ll make the deck particularly good because the limitations on the cards are rough though

Notably, Whale doesn’t stop you from adding multiple copies of the same spell, so you can just add two Advanced Heraldry Arts. Which is a sizable amount of guys to obtain really. I guess these could be weird cards to occasionally see in a Ryzeal list of some sort, or to play the Ice Normal Summon engine for. The Quick-Play spell being generic is really funny – it’s not great but someone somewhere is gonna use it to shut down an archetype relevancy and make someone very mad.

      • Prinny on December 13, 2024 6:03 am

Ice Normal Summon engine? whats that?

Identity theft is not a joke, Tron!

    21. thebaseddd2 on December 13, 2024 4:03 am

Yup, yup, No. 69 changing form 2 times (for the same effect activation!?) on top of its missing effects was FREE REAL ESTATE. Doesn’t mean I forgive them for nerfing No. noice in the first place. First non-Hope related nanbazu to have an alternate form that isn’t chaos/shining but again it’s not original. Still missing Falcon that functions like Xiangke Magician. Funny to see the transfer materials line 2 times on 1 card.

Ygo loves its name cutouts as a power source. To strip a monster of its name is the ultimate humiliation! Now I’m thinking about the recent Jump fiesta trap and need a see a whole deck for punishing same name.

    22. thebaseddd2 on December 13, 2024 4:53 am

Oh, I was so focused on No. 69 I didn’t notice one of No. 8’s anime effects became a spell.
Submersible Carrier Aero Shark: First time?
Maybe No. 44’s other effects will become a spell someday too.

      What in a name?
Number 8: Heraldic King Genom-Heritage (Keeps title and name)
Number 69: Heraldry Crest (Loses title, keeps name)
Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch (Keeps title, loses name)

Nothing unknown about the tcg’s naming consistency.

    23. DirtCHEAP on December 13, 2024 5:16 am

New support bringing 2 things that sounds interesting to me. Gryphon counting as 2 materials for an XYZ summon and this Unknown mechanic.

    24. Daxonion on December 13, 2024 7:00 am

For anyone wondering about the name is treated as “unknown”
      – in the TCG ‘name is treated’ is (99%) gonna be translated to ‘name becomes’ so if you have something as EvilTwin monster whose name is now “unknown” you wont gain LP from Sunny’s Snitch.

However, still no idea how this will affect OPT effects but i doubt its designed with the idea to BUFF your opponents OPT effects. We wait for policy/rulings update on these.

Removing names was one of the mechanics I really liked in the anime (it was even in ARC-V!) but thought would never come to the IRL game. I’m so happy I was wrong! Giving N69 the Winged Dragon of Ra treatment with multiple forms is really cool too. It’s a shame they don’t have a way to summon C69 even if Vetrix never used it himself.

      • HalfDemonInuyasha on December 13, 2024 10:35 pm

It still does. We already have cards that are HOPT that can change their own names but are ruled that it doesn’t allow them to use their effect, change their name, then use the effect again.

Where’s my skill drain monster that casually absorbs all other monster effects?

    36. Namesky on December 14, 2024 7:55 am

People complain about Water Heraldry Beast not being a shark but the thing is that Heraldry monsters are based on popular themes in actual heraldry. Whales are surprisingly popular and classic symbol used in heraldry while sharks are much rarer and mostly used on modern coats of arms.

    37. Minty on December 14, 2024 2:57 pm

These probably won’t be good but these are still really cool effects and they have surprisingly good synergy with Patriarch, since every monster will be named “Unknown” with Flash you can pop all but one of them, Or if you somehow get a Crest or Genom-Heritage to be named “Unknown” by stealing the name from your opponent you can pop them all. Even if they won’t be meta it’s still so cool to see a card’s mechanics being expanded, and especially in a way we’ve never seen before.
