Get ready to celebrate Haloween again in February
Join Pumpking and his Pals for Halloween in the Spring, with Maze of Muertos!
(A brave Duelist enters a spooky cemetery at midnight on Halloween…)“Day of the Dead comes early this year in Maze of Muertos, as we meet up with Duelist Kingdom’s ghoulish graveyard ghost: Bonz!”That’s what the message said. And it said to come here to find early packs of this set!
Wait…what’s that sound?
SMASH
(An enormous one-eyed Jack-o-Lantern bursts through the ground! Pumpking RISES – FROM THE GRAVE!)
Oh, wow, it’s Pumpking the King of Ghosts! In the…flesh? What are you doing here? This is kind of like the place you battled Red-Eyes Black Dragon, all those years ago. You’re the original Halloween Horrorshow!
(Pumpking glares with his giant-sized eye. Clearly not a happy pumpkin.)
Yeah that was a long time ago, and you haven’t had a power upgrade since. Now you’re probably thinking, “I’m mad, and I’m not gonna take it anymore!” Hey, wait a second! This new Maze of Muertos set might have something for you. Let’s look around and see what we can find.
(Pumpking tilts his big pumpkin head forward. Was that a nod? It must have been.)
Here’s a Field Spell Card right here. It looks like that cave with all the skulls, in Duelist Kingdom. This Field Spell lets you Set any of your Call of the Haunteds from your Deck or Graveyard. So you can get all 3 at once!
AND it powers them up, too, so Call of the Haunted sends an opponent’s monster to the Graveyard, on top of Summoning a monster from yours! How’s that sound?
(Pumpking’s head tilts to the side. We seem to have his interest, but he clearly wants more.)
What’s this, here? Ectoplasmic Fortification? You used this in that cave Duel, too! It powers up your Zombie monsters’ Attack Points!
(Pumpking taps a vine on the ground, impatiently.)
Okay, I’ll keep reading. Hmm…AND it draws a card for every Call of the Haunted you control. That’s new!
(Pumpking points at…a brick?)
What if we draw it the first turn? Don’t worry, it says you can also use this same card to get the Field Spell out of your Deck.
(Now Pumpking’s pointing at himself.)
Hey, you’re right! You can get the Field Spell, OR a Level 6 Zombie, like yourself. And it bumps up Zombies’ Attack Points, and draws a card for every Call of the Haunted you control. That seems like a lot. It’s good to be the King!
(Pumpking proudly adjusts his crown.)
Let’s keep looking. Here’s another Monster Card. It’s…you! It’s a Pumpking upgrade, a new Level 6 monster. You can reveal it and discard a card, to Set Call of the Haunted from your Deck, and then you can activate that Call of the Haunted that same turn. And when the new you is Special Summoned, it Summons another Level 6 Zombie from the Deck. Okay, I see where this is going. You reveal and discard new Pumpking to Set Call of the Haunted, then activate Call of the Haunted right away to Special Summon Pumpking back, and then Pumpking Special Summons another Level 6 Zombie from the Deck. Boom! Two Level 6’s on the field. A great first-turn card you could even Xyz Summon right away.
(Pumpking ponders, then starts flailing its vines around itself. Like they were…orbiting?)
You want me to look for an Xyz Monster? Good idea. Let’s see…oh here’s one! It kind of looks like you, but bigger and with more eyes.
(Pumpking seems ESPECIALLY pleased at that.)
This Xyz Monster protects all Zombies from being targeted with effects. And when it’s Xyz Summoned, it adds Call of the Haunted – or anything that mentions it – from your Deck to your hand. Like Man with the Mark from Maze of the Master!
(Pumpking tilts his head down again. As if saying to keep reading.)
…AND you can detach 1 material to return 2 cards anywhere on the field back to the hand.
(Seemingly satisfied, Pumpking turns away and starts doing something in the dirt. He’s certainly less threatening but…wait…is he drawing something?)
Hey, those are Joey’s monsters! But now they’re Zombies. What are they doing on Team Pumpking?
(Pumpking stares impatiently and points behind a tombstone.)
Did you see this Legion-of-the-Not-So-Living around here? Oh, here it is! A Rank 7 Xyz Monster that you can Rank-Up into. It can attach an opponent’s monster to itself from their field or Graveyard, as material.
(Pumpking continues to stare.)
…as a QUICK EFFECT!
(There we go. Pumpking gives as much of a thumbs-up as a pumpkin can give with its vines. It really IS good to be the King.)
Well, everyone, you heard the pumpkin! Er…PumpKING. Maze of Muertos is the latest anime-inspired booster for the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME. Imma summon Spiridao
To mill CROW TENGU
DISRUPTION TIME
They say it is based on the cave where Joey dueled Bonz in the Duelist Kingdom arc.
Still hoping we get new Mask support in the future. Yugi and Kaiba vs Lumis and Umbra was goated.
and Slime…would be cool if they make a Slime version of Slifer the Sky Dragon that also require 3 tributes
Or retrains of Arkana’s card.
Yes. I was really hoping for Umbra and Lumis. Pumpking and his daughter are nice, but I really wanted Mask support. Zombies have solid zombifying support, Bonz doesn’t need 10 cards.
Also if anyone needs a revamp from Duelist Kingdom it’s PaniK. Castle of Dark Illusions was randomly forced to be Pumpking support when it was released and it’s from an entirely different deck focused on entirely different things. It needs a retrain with an effect like one of those Millennium monsters that changes it into a continuous spell. Along with PaniK’s other Fiends like King of Yami Makai.
Also it’s disappointing that the Pumpking upgrade uses a summoning type that Bonz could never use. They’ve managed to avoid doing this sort of thing for the last 4 Maze sets. I guess they just couldn’t help themselves.
But you DO get Mask support in this product. Didn’t you see the Masked Heroes?
Now we need retrains/upgrades of Panik’s stuff. Why they connected Castle of Dark Illusions to Pumpking is still unknown to me.
If the Panik support doesnt involve monsters with weird base stats (e.g. 1380 ATK) don’t bother.
I would love to see paniks stuff. Reaper of the cards and castle of dark illusions need retrains
That’d be pretty funny actually.
All the effects would be qualified with “monsters you control whose ATK or DEF is not 0 and also not divisible by 50…”
@Gotanda: If they’re going to remake PaniK’s monsters, they’re probably going to use the manga stats. Hence, I’d rather have Lumis & Umbra support than PaniK’s.
@A 0 is divisible by 50, you can remove that part lol
At this point, TCG would be able to give Serenity her own Deck considering they chose Bonz out of all the Characters.
Red-Eyes getting into other Decks without help its own Deck.
Who knows ?
Maybe the zombified Joey Monsters might help ?
Especially if the Rank 7 is generic.
Still praying for that Shinato retrain since Noah in Duel Links now.
Omg yes Ulysses Noah was one of my fav Dm characters and his spirit monsters need more stuff id love if we got a Shinato spirit retrain like how we got Shinobird. Noah getting support in general would be 🔥.
Since Rituals had been getting alot of love lately now would a good time IMO. Hopefully in the next set 🤞.
Oh my god… YES. Chronicle Sorceress is FINALLY playable in the TCG. Dogmatika Chaplain too. I hope spool/spoon magistus is in the set because I don’t see it in the art.
Diabellstar is going to warp the format again though. 🤣
Spoon and the Fusion are confirmed to be in BPRO from the set description.
That’s a real disappointment! Considering Konami followed up on Odion’s support in the Maze series, I was strongly hoping this set would logically continue the trend and give us a proper wave of Bakura’s Diabound cards. It looks like we’ll have to put all our faith in the official LIMIT OVER COLLECTION -THE RIVALS- coming from the OCG in March 2026. That collection is explicitly featuring cards based on the ‘rivals of the franchise’, which is the perfect place for Diabound. Fingers crossed for a huge push there!
Maze is clearly place where they retrain old but already existing in TCG decks so I’m not sure why are you crying?
feel like rivals one is gonna be focused on the kaiba equivalent rivals
You’re missing the pattern Konami established with these Maze sets. It’s not about new decks, it’s about closing old story-arc gaps from the original series:
Maze of Memories did Duelist Kingdom Gaps: Flame Swordsman and Gate Guardian. Maze of Millennia did Battle City Gaps: Mystical Beast Serket for Odion. The logical next step was the Millennium World Arc Rival: Bakura’s Diabound Kernel. It was the perfect slot for his ultimate shadow beast, just like they finally upgraded Serket.
Instead of following the grand narrative with Bakura, they went sideways with Pumpking (a Bonz card). That’s why I’m disappointed; it breaks the pattern!
nah what?. Gate Guardian, then flame swordsman? there was no pattern there.
You are completely wrong. There absolutely is a clear pattern based on the original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime arcs:
Maze of Memories (2023): Focused on a major, multi-piece monster from the Duelist Kingdom Arc: the Gate Guardian (Paradox Brothers).
Maze of Millennia (2024): Focused on remaining iconic cards from Duelist Kingdom (Flame Swordsman) and a central monster from the Battle City Arc (Mystical Beast Serket for Odion).
Following this neat, Arc-by-Arc progression, the logical next step was clearly the final arc: The Dawn of the Duel / Millennium World Arc.
This is precisely why I had such high hopes for Bakura’s Diabound Kernel next! It perfectly fit the pattern of upgrading the key, multi-part boss monsters from the original series’ major storylines. Konami choosing Bonz’s card instead simply broke their own established, logical sequence.
You’re smoking dust.
Uh, what? There’s no pattern and there’s literally no story gaps from the anime. Flame Swordsman was just Joey’s ace before Red-Eyes, the Paradox Bros were just “villains of the week”, and Odion had his story arc finished in anime.
What the Maze series does do is take old, fairly lame but iconic cards from the anime and actually make them usable: Flame Swordsman was a low-ATK, non-effect Fusion monster that never saw play, Gate Guardian was harder to summon than an Egyptian God and the 3 monsters you needed to get it out were more useful, and Serket relying on “Temple of the Kings” being out to just exist doomed it to being passed over in favor of things like Summoned Skull. “Diabound Kernel” came late enough in the anime to actually have some use in the modern game, so it getting retrains is a low priority compared to things like Pumpking.
@Akiza nah sorry but that explained nothing. There is, and never was, a pattern.
Sky Striker promos are still missing
Oh no what could we possibly do without it ?
Now there’s only 517 sky striker cards left to use. You took my only food and now I’m going to starve.
Crazy that they gave Bonz of all people Xyz monsters and a Rank-Up gimmick. If there was to be any Extra Deck shenanigans, I was expecting it to be Synchros in reference to the Zombie Counterpart series of cards.
FunFact: The Catacombs may be based on Reshef of Destruction where you find Bonz in the game.
Believe it or not, I’ve been dying for a deck base on the duel between Bones vs Joey! Monsters returning as zombies is so frightening-awesome! I can’t wait!
WHERE. IS. MY. FLAMETONGUE!?!?!?!?!?!?

Just realized that what I thought was a Mimicat retrain at the bottom left of the first pack is a Sanaki. So that is confirmed as well!
Probably save Linear Magnum as an import for BPRO
Wow
This game basically survives by nostalgia and awesome artworks.
I’ll be waiting for Beaver Warrior archetype…
So the focus this year is “Bones” from DM, like Zombies need more support, granted it “Bones” support so let’s just hope we don’t get a “Zombie World: M2” that makes the trouble we get out of the old one look like child’s play.
Granted the paradox brothers and Odian did get some good support and actual archetypes for their cards, so hopefully “Bones” gets something good to his name.
Granted I’m hoping that this is the set where we get “Action Fields” turned into real field spells that are better for casual players than the big leagues.
His name is spelled: Bonz
Chronicle Sorceress is finally coming to the TCG! About time, they took forever on that one for no reason. More importantly, as I’ll want to use it in my decks, I am happy to see Dark Magician of Destruction is coming soon, it is a really good card! It can even grab Chaos Form for Chaos MAX decks if you play a Diabellstar mini package with it.
Anyways, the new Pumpking & Call of the Haunted stuff looks fun! I just watched a video on somebody wanting a remake of Pumpking the other day ago, nice timing! As a side note, I was hoping for a remake Call of the Haunted to make it work more like it did in the anime… But strong support for it is still better then nothing.
Can they stop making DM themed support? Is nostalgia baiting all the TCG has?
Never going to happen bud. Outside of meta players DM nostalgic is all that keeping this franchise alive at this point.
I don’t mind DM nostalgia bait if it is for minor characters that never got any time in the spotlight like Bonz, Lumis & Umbra, etc. I prefer that than them printing 570 more Blackwings or Performapals or Heroes.
It’s an interesting thing to make new archetypes out of while still being a reference. Most characters from GX onward inherently have an archetype already. Making one out of a DM character’s random pile deck is kind of neat.
DM is the era worst suffering from ‘You can’t really run the Deck show in the show’, so it’s the one most in need of these support waves.
at least I get MAN but Bonz was a one bit antagonist who had one minor duel, come on
though if this is good in genesys I can see the dd crow stocks rising even more
Genesys in February is to be smoking the same dust as the guy who was seeing patterns that weren’t there.
they kept speed duels around for like 3 years even though no one was playing that and I pressume didn’t have it cooking for 2 years before rolling out
he had one minor duel
then got murdered by bakura
Still better than all 517 blackwing duels combined, the ocg needs to release glassman already.
Darn, I wanted a proper spell version of Call of the Haunted and leave behind cards that are functionally spells with built-in Anti-Spell Fragrance. My idea was a Rekindling for monsters destroyed in battle, treat them as DARK zombies with 0 def, no changing battle positions as all conditions, and the continuous effect being if any of those monsters would be destroyed in battle it gains 200 atk instead. Maybe with effects negated, maybe no immediate use of them as kindling for the extra deck defeating the entire exercise but that’s water under the bridge depending on the rest of the legal card pool.
im so happy 🙂
“(Pumpking points at…a brick?)
What if we draw it the first turn? Don’t worry, it says you can also use this same card to get the Field Spell out of your Deck.”
Sir, konami is aware of the abelist slur.a second tower.bush.meme
“(Pumpking continues to stare.)
…as a QUICK EFFECT!”
Konami thinks being cheeky will excuse themselves for placating the monster when they themselves are the Dr. Frankenstein who created the monster in the first place.
“Hey, those are Joey’s monsters! But now they’re Zombies. What are they doing on Team Pumpking?”
Yeah, yeah, a bunch of monster being one monster. Why does Dark Scorpion Burglars have worse stats than the individual members again?
The pumpking-xyz will be able to rank up into a rank 7 and they’re teasing Joey’s monsters with the last artwork. So we are probably going to get a Red-Eyes Pumpking Dragon (or maybe Orange-Eyes) as the Rank 7. If they tease the remaining cards in the same way, they will probably claim Pumpking is taking over Red-Eyes as revenge for destroying it back in the day.
I think the concept, pumpkins support, is just a little lame, but the execution here seems interesting. I appreciate the brazenness of designing around “oh this old dm card is kinda junk so just set all 3 from deck” in between this and the Odeon cards.
Chronicle Sorceress is finally free from OCG jail!
So this is how Red-Eyes became Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon
it fell under Punpking’s control and slowly evolved until it became the ruler of the undead.
It amazes me how people complain about not getting support for the characters they wanted, when the reality is that Konami TCG doesn’t follow any pattern and just panders to nostalgia. You may like it or not. Bonz, yes, he was an insignificant secondary character, but he appeared in two arcs, unlike Panick, who appears in Duelist Kingdom, and Umbra and Lumis, who appear in Battle City. People will never be satisfied. Pumpking is an iconic card in the game despite how useless he is, but I’m glad he’s getting direct support, as well as for his zombie theme, which hasn’t had anything decent in a long time.
