Strategic Summary:
Today’s profile is yet another amalgamation of various archetypes, combining the Byssted Dragons with the Runick (previously translated as Mysterune), while throwing in a bit of a Cubic engine. Starting with the Byssted monsters, these Dragons are primarily Level 6, Summoning themselves from the hand by banishing a LIGHT or DARK monster from either GY. Byssted Druidwurm (YGOrg Translation) carries an effect, when sent from the Field to the GY, to send an opponent’s Special Summoned monster to the GY. Byssted Magnumut’s (YGOrg Translation) effect tutors any Dragon from your Deck or GY during the End Phase of a turn it was Special Summoned, and Byssted Saronir (YGOrg Translation) sends a Byssted monster or a Branded Spell/Trap from the Deck to the GY whenever it is sent to the GY. The theme is led by The Byssted Lubellion (YGOrg Translation), who tutors any Byssted monster by sending itself from the hand to the GY, and who tutors a Branded Continuous S/T while on your field!
Switching gears, the Runick archetype is primarily composed of Quickplay Spells and Fusion Monsters that can be summoned using those Spells. The key to this archetype is Runick Fountain, their Field Spell that lets you draw up to 3 cards by shuffling that many Runick Quickplay Spells from the GY back into the deck. This hand-reload, combined with the theme’s emphasis on banishing as much of your opponent’s deck away as possible, gives you a steady stream of options to respond to your opponent and snuff them out of the duel. As for the Runick spells themselves, I need to provide a personal reminder – always enter the Battle Phase after using one, cause only then will the Battle Phase be considered to be Skipped. In the replays, I clearly failed to do that multiple times, resulting in some duels being extended a bit longer than necessary.
As for the final engine at play today, that’s the Cubics. While I didn’t get a good chance to showcase this, the thought here is to utilize Vijam the Cubic Seed as a deterrent, since it can lock down the effects of your opponent’s monsters by battling them then negating their effects with a Cubic Counter. This also pairs well with Cubic Ascension, a Trap Card that can be banished from the GY to Special Summon 1 or 3 Vijam from hand, Deck, or GY while your LP are 2000 less than the opponent. This combines extremely well with the mass milling from Pilgrim Reaper, or just a discard from Hugin the Runick Wings or Muninn the Runick Wings. Don’t just stall for a miracle, build a Byssted hybrid to survive!
