        ….why? I mean, it’s not like they don’t pull from other cultures as well. In Master and Speed Duel formats, we’ve got a deck based on Dante’s “The Inferno”, a deck based on the King Arthur mythos, (that uses the German names of all the characters too), a deck based on French cuisine (well, that one’s not in any Speed formats yet), a deck based on desserts and pastries, multiple superhero decks that all take a lot of inspiration from comic book heroes (face it, everybody, Elemental HERO Bubbleman is just Bath Time Batman), a small series of cards based on H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos, MULTIPLE monsters based on the Egyptian pantheon, a deck based on MULTIPLE different sports (Ultra Athletes), a cousin of said deck based on various forms of vehicle racing, a deck where dragons are both guns and bullets, a deck where most of the boss monsters are named after prominent historical or mythical figures in human history (D/D/D), and a deck based on Lucifer’s rebellion in the Christian religion (Darklords).

        Individual cards can also reference stuff on their own. For instance, Number 22: Zombiestein is an obvious reference to Frankenstein’s monster, but the number 22 and the card’s debut in the 18th chapter of the ZEXAL manga is a reference to the 1822 second edition publication of “Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus”, which was the first time Mary Shelley’s name appeared on the book.

        The names of the Numeron Gates are all Sanskrit words for their designated numbers (though Numeron Chaos Gate’s name “Sunya” is Sanskrit for the number zero).

        These are all just a few examples I’ve given you. There are TONS of others besides.

        And what’s more, they’re a Japanese company. Why SHOULDN’T they put in stuff referencing their culture? Hell, they even put in cards based on their own VIDEO GAMES (Gradius and Castlevania being the most well known examples).
