Your future is in the palm of my hand.
GX Duel Memorial Album #10
(We Were Asked Questions About Upcoming Episodes.)
TURN-58 & TURN-59
I received some questions about these episodes, so I will do my best to try to answer them.
Q. In the clash between Edo and Judai’s “HERO”es, what ideas were you keeping in mind when you introduced the “Destiny HERO”es? What concepts and motifs were you considering with the “Destiny HERO”es? Also, what was the reason why there’s no women among their ranks?
First off, Edo’s character and personality and the “Destiny HERO” cards were the world building of the script writer, Yoshida Shin-san (I don’t know how much I can explain here). So when making them, I was always tried to make sure they stayed in line with Yoshida-san’s mental image of them. Not all of the characters in “GX” were written by specific scriptwriters, but when it came to Edo, it was basically always Yoshida-san, at least initially.
The concept also went through many twists and turns. Initially, Edo’s Deck was planned to be based around parallel versions of the “Elemental HERO”, but as Edo’s backstory was fleshed out, it became clear that while we could use this early on, this gimmick could not be the main focus. When we decided to revamp, I asked for an image of the cards Edo would use, as we hadn’t fleshed out Edo’s cards while working out his dramatic backstory, and vague keywords like “Destiny”, “Fate” and “Manipulate the future” came to mind. Based on that, we came up with a concept and made a proposal. I’m pretty sure on the first draft I proposed “F HERO”. I suggested keywords such as “Fortune HERO” or “Future HERO” for an alternative theme from “Elemental”, but ultimately “F” was rejected because it came after “E” in the Alphabet. That’s how we ended up on “D”. And fortunately, “D” fit with “Destiny” which means the same thing as Fortune when it comes to 運命.
From there we had to establish what kind of monsters the “Destiny HERO”es were. Returning to the keywords we drummed up, we were thinking, ‘hey what about parts of a clock (Gears, Crowns, etc.) or maybe various kind of clocks (Water Clocks and Hourglasses) as motifs’? We tried to express the words in other languages such as German to enhance the word feel, also we tried expanding the motif from clocks to time itself, we proposed various ideas like mythology, units of measurement, or technical jargon, but ultimately, as in Edo’s dialogue/lines, they became a group of monsters based on various words starting with the letter “D”. The concept really was just “D” (ahaha).
However, the whole “Controlling Time” concept was kept for the effects of his cards. The same thing goes with “Clocktower Prison”.
I think it was really difficult for the design staff and those in charge of ordering production materials to respond to a vague concept of “HEROes based around ‘D'”. I want to take this opportunity to apologize and give them my thanks. I apologize! Thank you so very very much!!
There’s no real reason the theme lacks female members, it’s probably just because the theme’s naming sense to try and give them a sense of thematic unity was “D[…]guy”.
TURN-60
Q. With regards to the Beast-Warrior Deck Fubuki uses in his Duel against Asuka, is this Deck his actual Deck he used before he became ‘Darkness’?
The request from that episode’s screenwriter was “A Deck fit for a Teenage Heartthrob”. This seemed like an interesting idea in its own right, but I couldn’t think of any existing cards that really fit the bill, so I ended up making a brand-new Deck. Since that would be a bit too extravagant for a one-shot Deck, I wondered if there was another way I could come at this. I came up with the idea of “What if I went with Beast-Warriors? I could have them be actors (Stars) they could wear masks, cloaks and outfits and perform…” and that’s how Fubuki’s Deck came together.
But, to ultimately answer your question, this Deck wasn’t his original Deck, but rather one he slapped together at the last minute in a hare-brained scheme to convince Asuka.
TURN-61
Saiou was originally conceived as a character for the “GX” Movie Project that was in development at the time, but due to various circumstances, he ended up appearing in the TV show as a major villain instead. I was wondering what theme to use for his Deck as I went into a meeting with Takahashi Kazuki-sensei, and I suggested “Arcana Force”. I’m glad that Sensei seemed to really like the idea.
