Strategic Summary:
Welcome back for another Creative Deck Profile, and today we’re taking back on the Mitsurugi theme and let me tell you, this build is super fun. The Mitsurugi archetype is best known for its unending assault of monsters, with Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi initiating a chain of summons that results in a very scary endboard. With Mitsurugi Ritual summoning from the hand or Deck, it’s quite easy to bridge into the entire rest of the archetype, even before you factor in their search power each time you Tribute one of the Ritual Monsters. Then of course, you have the one-sided Raigeki on command that Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi brings, and you have yourself everything a deck could need. All of this is accessed by Pure Mitsurugi, Ryzeal Mitsurugi, Orcust Mitsurugi, and all the other hybrid builds that have popped up, but what if you could do all that, but then add in extra disruption and power of the hand and extra deck, just as a nice cherry on top? Well, that’s what you got with the Monarchs!
The newest wave of Monarch support introduced a ton of key cards to the strategy, but none as impactful as The Monarchs Revolt. This Normal Spell reveals 3 monsters with Monarch stats (1000 DEF and either 800 or 2400+ ATK) in your Deck, your opponent adds one to your hand, then the rest go to GY. This sets up 3 of 4 of your best cards: Erebus the Underworld Monarch, to disrupt the opponents hand and add itself back to hand, Eidos the Underworld Monarch, to Special Summon itself back when you Tribute Summon and tutor anything else you need, Tessera the Primal Squire, which summons another Squire or Vassal from the deck when sent to the GY, and Steel-Stringed Sacrifice to recover a Level 5+ monster from the GY, and give you free Tribute Material. Throw all of them together, and you can quickly enter a situation where Erebus leads to a Zaborg the Mega Monarch situation, ripping a card from their hand and 8 from the Extra Deck, sending 3 Herald of the Arc Light to tutor your Mitsurugi combo pieces. In a pinch, the Mitsurugi even offer a monster you can Tribute Summon – Mitsurugi no Miko, Wousu – letting you bridge the gap the other way as well. Combine Rituals and Tributes with this unique hybrid strategy!
