Strategic Summary:
Welcome to a special CDP, this time featuring the new DARK Reptile World Premiere theme making its debut in the Supreme Darkness core set. This archetype is the TCG’s latest attempt to take on the Ritual Mechanic, designing a theme that loves tributing in every way – so let’s get into the specifics. This theme is headlined by two Rituals: Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi, the purple one, and Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi, the orange one. The purple one destroys all monsters the opponent controls on Special Summon, additionally when the opponent activates a card or effect, it can make the opponent discard 1 to allow it to resolve. The orange one allows you to Special Summon any Reptile from your GY when the opponent Special Summons, once per chain. Both share an effect when tributed to add any Mitsurugi card and then Special Summon itself, and this is the unique mechanic of the deck – they all trigger off of being Tributed! Now for a Ritual theme you will need a Ritual Spell, and that’s where Mitsurugi Ritual comes in. This Spell either Ritual Summons from the Deck tributing Reptiles in your hand/you control, OR you can Ritual Summon from the hand, tributing Reptiles from your Deck. The two options play extremely well with the other new monsters which each trigger on Tribute, but it also works well with existing Reptile support such as Night Sword Serpent. The final key element to this new theme is that they can search Mitsurugi Great Purification, a Normal Trap that offers an omni-negate by Tributing a Level 5 or higher Reptile, plus it even has a GY effect to recover a Reptile from your GY!
So this theme has a ton of consistency and power, loves to be Tributed, and is Reptile… how can we support that better? Oh right, the Ogdoadic exist and is a Reptile theme that checks all of those boxes. Led by Nauya, the Ogdoadic Remnant and Nunu, the Ogdoadic Remnant, this LIGHT/DARK Reptile archetype is no stranger to making absurd amounts of advantage. This is taken to quite literally the next level though, as the higher-leveled Ogdoadic monsters can Tribute monster(s) you control to Special Summon themselves, allowing you to trigger Mitsurugi effects while advancing your gamestate. Add in Nephilabyss, the Ogdoadic Overlord which can Special Summon itself while you’re Ritual Summoning a Mitsurugi, then in turn use its effect to Special Summon another monster from your GY. Eventually, all of these Reptiles can be used to summon King of the Feral Imps, make Link Summons such as the venturing into the Ragnaraika archetype, or you can even just dedicate them to Special Summoning the Ogdoadic royalty in Amunessia, the Odgoadic Queen and Aron, the Ogdoadic King. Both punish the opponent for playing the game, and add even more disruption on top of that offered by the Mitsurugi. Hope you enjoyed this take on the new Mitsurugi archetype, and catch you next time with even more Dragons…
