A twist of fate within the Temple.

    Strategic Summary:

Welcome back for another Creative Deck Profile, and this time I’m shining a spotlight on the brand new Dark Time Wizard (YGOrg Translation) archetype debuting in BETB. This theme serves as an amalgamation of Joey’s cards during the Battle City arc, and makes the most of your luck! Starting off with Dark Time Wizard itself, this Quick-Play Spell either adds a card that mentions it, then returns to the hand in the End Phase, or it can let you call then flip a coin, destroying all opponent’s monsters if you get it right, or yours if you get it wrong. This second effect may seem 50/50, but the boss of the theme, Red-Eyes Black Dragon Exceed (YGOrg Translation), turns either outcome into a success since it can be Special Summoned by Tributing any monster after Dark Time Wizard destroys a card, then it summons any Level 8 or lower monster from your GY.

In addition to this core combo, the theme has an assortment of other monsters to help it succeed in other ways. Like Alligator’s Sword Dragon Knight (YGOrg Translation), which tutors 2 S/Ts that mention Dark Time Wizard, or Jinzo – Energy Shocker (YGOrg Translation) which destroys all Traps the opponent controls before preventing their activation or effects. Personally, I think the stronger lineup is in their support S/Ts, such as Reversal Box (YGOrg Translation), which depending on your luck, can negate up to 6 monster effects your opponent attempts to activate on the field, summoning a monster that mentions Dark Time Wizard each time you call a cointoss correctly! Regardless, this serves as a solid core that is just begging to be mixed with another archetype, so let’s call in Temple of the Kings next!

The Temple of the Kings, or Tombkeeper, theme, is best known for its use of the Apophis Continuous Trap cards to control the duel, one turn at a time. Between Treasures of the Kings and The Man with the Mark, it has plenty of consistency, and that just steamrolls if you happen to have a Verdict of Anubis backed by multiple Apophis the Swamp Deity… yeah, your opponent is just not going to have a good day. Tombkeeper decks have always been great going 1st though – what makes this hybrid tick is that it can successfully go 2nd as well! Between both Dark Time Wizard’s uncanny ability to break boards as well as Sleeping Scapegoats (YGOrg Translation) to summon your Swift Panther Warrior (YGOrg Translation) if the opponent controls a monster, your Dark Time Wizard engine puts in a lot of work. Then on the Tombkeeper side, a dash of Defense of the Temple, Dangers of the Divine, and a banished The Winged Dragon of Ra from Merciless Scorpion of Serket can go a long way to threaten established boards. Once broken, you can re-establish control over the gamestate, with options like the new Protective Stone Gardenscaping (YGOrg Translation), ready to methodically add Continuous Trap Cards to your available arsenal. It’s Time for the Wizard to unseal the Temple… are you ready for that?
