Strategic Summary:

Welcome back for another Creative Deck Profile, this time featuring the debut of a brand new archetype to my channel – the Ashtra! This theme consists of Level 7 and Level 8 monsters of various Attributes/Types that are best leveraged as Synchro Material via their Normal Trap Cards. How? Well, each of these Main Deck Monsters can Summon themselves from hand by revealing and returning a set card you control to the hand, then each of the Normal Traps can Special Summon themselves as a Level 1 Tuner before immediately Synchro Summoning. Take Akasuna the Battle Ashtra, which sets any Ashtra Trap during your End Phase, such as Ashtra Cursed Roar (YGOrg Translation), then when you activate that Roar during the opponent’s turn, you can Synchro Summon into a Level 9 such as Virtual World Kyubi – Shenshen. Of course you also have in-theme Synchro options, such as Ashtra Susanoo, which banishes any number of Traps from your GY to banish that many cards on the field when Synchro Summoned. That said, the stronger Synchro is their Level 8 monster, the WATER/Wyrm Ashtra Mikumari-no-Mikoto, which mills any Ashtra card when Special Summoned before sending any card on the field to the GY. Additionally, every time your opponent activates a monster effect, it can set a Ashtra (or Normal Trap) back to your field.

Where this deck starts to stand out is its innate consistency, as either of the Level 7 options unlock a fairly full combo. You see, Mikumari the Sealing Deity Ashtra (YGOrg Translation) gets to tutor any non-Wyrm Ashtra while its on the field, and since Yoa the Plague Diety Ashtra (YGOrg Translation) grabs any Ashtra S/T, their Field Spell can do a lot of heavy lifting. You see, Ashtrashen – Gate to the Worlds Beyond can target any number of set cards you control, send them to the GY, then tutor the same number of Ashtra cards. Of course, this works great by targeting Traps that are otherwise useful in the GY like Transaction Rollback or The Black Goat Laughs, but it also can combine quite well with Toy Box, Toy Soldier, and Toy Tank, giving you free fodder for your troubles. The other solid engine to pair here is First Penguin and Royal Penguin Garden, as it can reveal your Extra Deck Mikumari to grab the Main Deck one, giving you even more cards to begin your one-card combos.
