CDP: Ashened Triamid – Dark Souls + Pyramids, ft. PHNI Support

    The Bonfire is lit.

    Strategic Summary:

Welcome to an off-cycle CDP, this time celebrating the arrival of the brand new Ashened WP archetype to the TCG in the upcoming PHNI set. The Ashened archetype consists of DARK/Pyro monsters that Special Summon themselves and destroy things, so let’s start with the boss monster that does both – Veidos. Veidos the Eruption Dragon of Extinction is the Level 9 boss of the theme, able to be Special Summoned during either Main Phase to the opponent’s field by destroying a card in the Field Zone, then it sets Ashened for Eternity to your field. While it does boast 2800 ATK, Veidos has two uses. First, whenever it is sent from the opponent’s field to the GY, it can destroy all monsters on the field. Second, you can use the effect of Ashened for Eternity to steal back an opponent’s monster that you own (i.e. Veidos) and reduce the ATK of all other monsters they control by its ATK. This is the core way for this deck to swing for game, as a win condition is hard to find with this new archetype.

Due to his fixation on destroying Field Spells, Veidos wants me to cover the theme’s Field Spell next, so let’s go there… or what’s left of it anyways. Obsidim, the Ashened City is most useful for its final effect, Special Summoning any Ashened monster from the Deck when destroyed or banished while in the Field Zone. Now, Veidos itself isn’t an Ashened monster, but you do have three to play with in the initial wave: King of the Ashened City, Hero of the Ashened City, and Priestess of the Ashened City. They all can be Special Summoned while Obsidim is in a Field Zone, but King gets to Special Summon another Ashened from the hand or Deck, Hero gets to destroy a Pyro on the field during either Main Phase, plus placing a new Obsidim on your Field if you killed Veidos, and Priestess can tutor any other Ashened card. The final new card in this initial wave is Awakening of Veidos, a Quick-Play Spell that places Obsidim, then tutors a Level 5 or higher DARK Pyro, aka Veidos. Oh, and an honorary member of this theme is Bonfire, since it tutors Priestess and is thematically relevant.

Alright, now that we got through the new cards, the strategy here is simple – get out your Obsidim, spam the board with Ashened, get out Veidos, steal it, then attack for game… Alone, the archetype has the same chances to win as your first attempt at a new boss in Dark Souls. So, today I’m pairing them with the Triamid to help pack an extra punch. This Rock archetype features a trio of Field Spells, each that carries an effect when sent from the Field Zone to the GY. For the important ones, Triamid Cruiser tutors a Triamid monster and Triamid Kingolem Special Summons one from the hand. In most cases, I like to leverage Triamid Sphinx here, as it is a fairly beefy monster that won’t fall to Veidos once you have just 1 Field Spell in the GY. The best synergy between the two themes comes with Triamid Loading, which tutors a Triamid S/T when any Field Spell is placed in a Field Zone. You can use this to grab a Field, or to grab Triamid Pulse for a bit more disruption during the opponent’s turn.

The last piece I want to highlight are a pair of tech cards I hope might find a home in Ashened in the long run. First up is Pop-Up, a Quick-Play Spell that activates a Field Spell from your deck if your opponent controls a card in their Field Zone while you don’t. Since you have a way to get Obsidim into the opponent’s Zone, this can serve as 3 more copies of Terraforming for any Field! On the other hand, we have Land Flipping, which lets you banish a Field Spell, placing it in the other Field Zone and replacing it with a different Field Spell from the GY! Is this a meme card? Probably. But it’s still fun to try to include in some deck. Anyways, hope you enjoy this fun take on the new archetype – can’t wait until the theme is more fully fleshed out with further support in LEDE!
