September was a big month for ruling changes.
“What happens if a monster I gain control of with the effect of Lyna the Light Charmer is changed to face-down Defense Position?”
Q: If a monster I took control of with the effect of Lyna the Light Charmer is changed to face-down Defense Position, what happens to it?
A: Since it is no longer being targeted by Lyna the Light Charmer, control of the monster changed to face-down Defense Position returns to your opponent.
The same applies if a monster you gained control of by the effects of the following monsters is changed to face-down Defense Position:
– Hiita the Fire Charmer
– Eria the Water Charmer
– Aussa the Earth Charmer
– Wynn the Wind Charmer
– Dharc the Dark Charmer
“Can I activate multiple copies of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing on the same Chain?”
Q: Can I activate multiple copies of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing on the same Chain? If so, can I reveal the same Level 1 monster to activate each?
A: You can activate multiple copies of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing on the same Chain, and you can also activate them by revealing the same Level 1 monster. When resolving Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, if the Level 1 monster you revealed as cost is no longer in your hand, the effect is not applied. Therefore for example, if you activate 2 copies of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing by revealing the same Level 1 monster, as Chain Link 1 and Chain Link 2, the one activated as Chain Link 2 will resolve normally, but the one activated as Chain Link 1 will not apply.
“Can I activate Charge of the Light Brigade while the effect of Dimensional Fissure is applying?”
Q: While the effect of Dimensional Fissure is applying, any monster sent to the GY is banished instead, so I cannot activate any effects that require a monster to be sent to the GY as an activation cost. But can I activate Charge of the Light Brigade, which sends multiple cards from the top of my Deck to the GY as cost?
A: It cannot be activated. While the effect of Dimensional Fissure is applying, monsters cannot be sent to the GY as an activation cost, so effects that may include monsters when sending cards from the Deck to the GY as an activation cost cannot be activated.
While the effect of Dimensional Fissure is applying, the following effects also cannot be activated:
– Card Trooper
– Celestia, Lightsworn Angel
– Naturia Beast
– Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss
– Deep Sea Sentry
– Deep Sea Minstrel
– Orbital Hydralander
“What happens if a monster I gained control of with Tuner’s Scheme is turned face-down?”
Q: If a Synchro Monster I gained control of by the effect of Tuner’s Scheme is turned face-down, what happens to the control of that Synchro Monster?
A: If a Synchro Monster you gained control of by the effect of Tuner’s Scheme is changed to face-down Defense Position, it stops being targeted by Tuner’s Scheme, and control of it returns to your opponent. Also, that Synchro Monster is no longer banished when it is destroyed. Furthermore, Tuner’s Scheme will remain face-up in the Spell & Trap Zone, but the effect that destroys it when the targeted monster leaves the field is no longer applied.
“After applying the effect of Crackdown, if the targeted monster is changed to face-down Defense Position, what happens to the applied effects?”
Q: I activated Crackdown by targeting a face-up monster in my opponent’s Monster Zone, and gained control of it. Afterward, if the targeted monster is changed to face-down Defense Position, what happens to each applied effect of Crackdown?
A: If a monster you gained control of by the effect of Crackdown is changed to face-down Defense Position, it stops being targeted by Crackdown. Therefore, the effect that takes control of it is no longer applied, and control of the monster returns to your opponent. Furthermore, the effect that prevent the monster from attacking or activating its effect no longer applies, so it can attack and activate its effects. Crackdown will remain face-up in the Spell & Trap Zone, but the effect that destroys it when the targeted monster leaves the field is no longer applied.
“If I Tribute Summon Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King by Tributing The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine or a Monster Card in the Spell & Trap Zone, which effects is it unaffected by?”
Q: If I Tribute the following cards to Tribute Summon Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King or Metaltron XII, the True Dracocombatant, which effects is it unaffected affected by?
(A) Embodiment of Apophis or The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine Special Summoned to the Monster Zone by their own effects.
(B) Monster Cards treated as Continuous Spell/Trap Cards.
A: The effect is applied based on the original card type of the Tributed card.
(A) It will be unaffected by Trap effects.
(B) It will be unaffected by monster effects.
“If a “True Draco” monster is changed to face-down Defense Position or temporarily banished, what happens to its effects?”
Q: If a Metaltron XII, the True Dracocombatant or Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King that was Tribute Summoned by Tributing only monsters is changed to face-down Defense Position by the effect of a Spell Card, or temporarily banished by an effect such as Interdimensional Matter Transporter, what happens to each of its effects?
A: In either case, the effect “Unaffected by the effects of cards with the same card type (Monster, Spell, and/or Trap) as the original card type of the cards Tributed for its Tribute Summon” is no longer applied, so it can be affected by monster effects again. (Even if it changes from face-down Defense Position to a face-up position again, the effect will not be reapplied.)
Additionally, even if a monster is changed to face-down Defense Position or temporarily banished, it is still treated as a Tribute Summoned monster. Therefore, even if Metaltron XII, the True Dracocombatant is changed to face-down Defense Position, or temporarily banished and returned to the field, you can still activate its effect that Special Summons a monster from your Extra Deck if it is destroyed. (Similarly, if a face-up Dreiath III, the True Dracocavalry General leaves the field in this case, you can activate its effect.) Even if a Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King is changed to face-down Defense Position or temporarily banished, its Quick Effect can still be activated.
If any of the following monsters that were Tribute Summoned are changed to face-down Defense Position and flipped face-up again, or temporarily banished, you can still activate their effects:
– Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter
– Ignis Heat, the True Dracowarrior
– Majesty Maiden, the True Dracocaster
“If a monster I gained control of with the effect of Brainwashing Beam is turned face-down, will control return to the opponent?”
Q: If a monster I took control of with the effect of Brainwashing Beam is changed to face-down Defense Position, what happens to it? Also, are the A-Counters on it removed?
A: Since it is no longer targeted by Brainwashing Beam, control of the monster changed to face-down Defense Position returns to your opponent. Also, all A-Counters on the monster are removed, and the effect “if all A-Counters are removed from that monster, or that monster is destroyed, destroy this card” no longer applies.
“If I Tribute a Spell/Trap Card for a Tribute Summon, does the effect of Precious Cards from Beyond activate?”
Q: If I Tribute the following cards to Tribute Summon Master Peace, the True Dracoslaying King, does the effect of Precious Cards from Beyond activate?
(A) 1 card in the Spell & Trap Zone and 1 monster in the Monster Zone.
(B) Embodiment of Apophis Special Summoned by its own effect and 1 monster in the Monster Zone.
A: The effect of Precious Cards from Beyond activates if you Tribute 2 or more monsters in the Monster Zone for a Tribute Summon.
(A) Since only 1 monster was Tributed, the effect of Precious Cards from Beyond does not activate.
(B) Since 2 monsters in the Monster Zone were Tributed, the effect of Precious Cards from Beyond activates.
“If a Set Raidraptor – Vanishing Lanius is flipped face-up during the same turn, can I activate its effect?”
Q: If I Normal Set a Raidraptor – Vanishing Lanius from my hand, but it is flipped face-up by an effect that turn, can I activate its effect? Also, if I Special Summon a Raidraptor – Vanishing Lanius in face-down Defense Position by an effect, but it is flipped face-up by another effect that turn, can I activate its effect?
A: If you Normal Set a Raidraptor – Vanishing Lanius from your hand, that does not count as a Normal Summon, so even if it is flipped face-up that turn, you cannot activate its effect. (A Normal Summon here refers to placing the monster from your hand to your Monster Zone in Attack Position.)
Also, if you Special Summon a Raidraptor – Vanishing Lanius in face-down Defense Position, that counts as a Special Summon, so if it is flipped face-up that turn, you can activate its effect during your Main Phase.
Similarly, if you Special Summon the following monsters in face-down Defense Position, their effects can be activated if they are flipped face-up during the same turn and remain face-up in the Monster Zone:
Effects that can be activated during the Main Phase of the turn they are Special Summoned.
– Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Leopard
– Raidraptor – Sharp Lanius
– Raidraptor – Mimicry Lanius
– Raidraptor – Tribute Lanius
– Raidraptor – Wild Vulture
– Raidraptor – Noir Lanius
– Performapal Bot-Eyes Lizard
– Performapal Uni
– Performapal Corn
– Performapal Celestial Magician
– Kashtira Riseheart
– Angello Vaalmonica
– Dimonno Vaalmonica
Effects that can be activated during the End Phase of the turn they are Special Summoned.
– Dark Magician of Chaos
– Majestic Mech – Senku
– Yosenju Misak
– Yosenju Magat
– Predaplant Spider Orchid
– Watch Cat
“Will a Tragoedia in my hand, field, or Deck be destroyed by the effect of Crush Card Virus?”
Q: If my opponent activates Crush Card Virus, will a Tragoedia in my hand or any I control be destroyed?
A: When your opponent activates and resolves Crush Card Virus, if the ATK of a face-up Tragoedia in your Monster Zone is 1500 or more due to its own effect or for other reasons, it will be destroyed.
Also, the ATK of a face-down Defense Position Tragoedia is treated as 0, and the ATK of Tragoedia in your hand is ?. Therefore, neither are treated as having 1500 or more ATK and are not destroyed.
Additionally, you cannot choose a Tragoedia with ? ATK in your Deck when destroying up to 3 monsters in your Deck.
“If the Xyz Summon of Cyber Dragon Infinity is negated, can I Xyz Summon a Cyber Dragon Infinity again that turn?”
Q: When attempting to Xyz Summon Cyber Dragon Infinity using Cyber Dragon Nova as a material, the Xyz Summon was negated by the effect of Angel Statue – Azurune, etc. If I Special Summon a Cyber Dragon Nova again that turn, can I then Xyz Summon a second copy of Cyber Dragon Infinity from my Extra Deck?
A: Yes, you can. If the Xyz Summon using the method “Once per turn, you can also Xyz Summon “Cyber Dragon Infinity” by using “Cyber Dragon Nova” you control as material” is negated, you can perform an Xyz Summon again that turn using that same method.
The same applies to the following monsters:
– Poseidra Abyss, the Atlantean Dragon Lord
– Madolche Queen Tiarafraise
– Full Armored Utopic Ray Lancer
– Xyz Armor Fortress
– Full Armored Dark Knight Lancer
– Gigantic “Champion” Sargas
– Kashtira Arise-Heart
– Galaxy-Eyes Cipher X Dragon
– Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS – Sky Thunder
– Drill Driver Vespenato
– Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon Overlord
– Dingirsu, the Orcust of the Evening Star
– Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Juggernaut Liebe
– Dark Armed, the Dragon of Annihilation
– Zoodiac Hammerkong
– Zoodiac Chakanine
– Zoodiac Tigermortar

“What happens if a monster equipped with a card such as Graydle Alligator is changed to face-down Defense Position?”
Q: If a monster equipped with Graydle Alligator, Graydle Cobra, or Graydle Eagle is changed to face-down Defense Position by the effect of Book of Moon, what happens to the effects “While this card is equipped to a monster by this effect, take control of that monster. When this card leaves the field, destroy the equipped monster”?
A: If a monster equipped with your Graydle Alligator, etc. is changed to face-down Defense Position, that monster can no longer be equipped with any Equip Cards, so Graydle Alligator, etc. is destroyed. In that case, since it is no longer being targeted by Graydle Alligator, etc., it will not be destroyed by the effect “when this card leaves the field, destroy the equipped monster”. Furthermore, since the effect “take control of that monster” is no longer applied to it, control of the monster returns to your opponent.
Similarly, if a monster you gained control of because it is equipped with any of the following cards is changed to face-down Defense Position, control of that monster returns to your opponent:
– Aiwass, the Magistus Spell Spirit
– Brain Jacker
– Dark Necrofear
– Snatch Steal
– Mikanko Reflection Rondo
– Falling Down
– Mark of the Rose
– Comic Hand
– The Mask of Remnants
“What happens if a monster I took control of is temporarily banished?”
Q: If I gained control of an opponent’s monster due to the following effects, and then temporarily banished it by the effect of Interdimensional Matter Transporter, what happens to control of that monster when it returns to my Monster Zone?
(A) Number 11: Big Eye (which does not specify taking control of a monster for a certain amount of time)
(B) Change of Heart (which specifies taking control of a monster for a certain amount of time)
A:
(A) You will continue to control it. For effects that do not specify for how long you gain control of a monster, such as Number 11: Big Eye, control of the monster will not return to your opponent if the monster is temporarily banished.
(B) Control of it returns to your opponent immediately. For effects that specify for how long you gain control of a monster, such as Change of Heart, that effect stops applying as soon as the monster is temporarily banished, so control returns to your opponent immediately when it returns to the Monster Zone.
Examples of other effects that do not specify for how long you gain control of a monster:
– Number F0: Utopic Draco Future
– Borreload Dragon
– Evilswarm Bahamut
– Goyo Emperor
– Goyo King
– Cyber Angel Natasha
– The Suppression Pluto

– Earthbound Immortal Uru
– Jowls of Dark Demise

“If The Phantom Knights of Break Sword that was Special Summoned from the GY or banishment is destroyed, can I activate its second effect?”
Q: If The Phantom Knights of Break Sword that was sent to the GY after being Xyz Summoned is Special Summoned by another effect, then destroyed and sent to the GY again, can its effect that Special Summons 2 “The Phantom Knights” monsters from the GY be activated?
A: It cannot be activated. If an Xyz Summoned card is Special Summoned from the GY or banishment and then destroyed, it is not treated as an Xyz Summoned card being destroyed.
Similarly, if the following monsters are Special Summoned from the GY or banishment and then destroyed (or sent to the GY or otherwise leave the field), their respective effects cannot be activated.

“If I Special Summon Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon, can I apply the effect of King of the Swamp?”
Q: If I Special Summon Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon using the method written in its text, can I apply the effect of King of the Swamp and use it as a Fusion Material?
A: No, you cannot. Special Summoning by the method written in its text is not a Fusion Summon, so the effects of King of the Swamp, Beastking of the Swamps, Muddy Mudragon, Goddess with the Third Eye, Versago the Destroyer, Mystical Sheep #1, The Light – Hex-Sealed Fusion, The Dark – Hex-Sealed Fusion, The Earth – Hex-Sealed Fusion, and Fusion Parasite cannot be applied.
However, if you activate a card such as Polymerization to Fusion Summon Blue-Eyes Twin Burst Dragon, the effects of monsters such as King of the Swamp can be applied. (You can perform the Fusion Summon using 1 King of the Swamp and 1 Blue-Eyes White Dragon.)
Similarly, the effects of monsters such as King of the Swamp cannot be applied when Special Summoning the following monsters using the methods written in their text:
– Enlightenment Dragon
– Gate Guardians Combined
– Gate Guardian of Water and Thunder
– Gate Guardian of Wind and Water
– Gate Guardian of Thunder and Wind

“Which effects can and cannot be activated while the effect of Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon is applying?”
Q: If the Continuous Effect of Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon that states “Neither player can Special Summon 2 or more monsters at the same time” is applying, can the following effects be activated? Also, what happens if Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon is Special Summoned by an effect chained to those effects?
ㆍRank-Up-Magic Doom Double Force
ㆍCipher Spectrum
ㆍScapegoat
ㆍNibiru, the Primal Being
ㆍExosister Martha
A: If the Continuous Effect of Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon is applying, neither player can activate effects that result in 2 or more monsters being Special Summoned at the same time. Therefore, the following effects cannot be activated.
ㆍCipher Spectrum
ㆍScapegoat
ㆍExosister Martha
Also, if Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon is Special Summoned by an effect chained to the activation of Cipher Spectrum, only the targeted monster is Special Summoned and the effect finishes resolving. (Similarly, with Exosister Martha, only Exosister Martha is Special Summoned from the hand and the effect finishes resolving.) If Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon is Special Summoned by an effect chained to the activation of Scapegoat, no Sheep Tokens are Special Summoned.
Additionally, effects that do not Special Summon 2 or more monsters at the same time, such as Rank-Up-Magic Doom Double Force and Nibiru, the Primal Being, can be activated and resolved normally while the effect of Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon is applying.
“How can I Fusion Summon Starving Venom Fusion Dragon?”
Q: Can Starving Venom Fusion Dragon be Fusion Summoned with the following effects?
(A) Super Polymerization
(B) Dragon’s Mirror
(C) Odd-Eyes Fusion
(D) Future Fusion
(E) Clock Lizard
A:
(A) Yes, you can. However, you cannot use face-down Defense Position DARK monsters in your opponent’s Monster Zone, or any monsters unaffected by Spell effects, as materials.
(B) You can Fusion Summon Starving Venom Fusion Dragon using the effect of Dragon’s Mirror if you use 2 monsters in your Monster Zone as materials. However, you cannot Fusion Summon Starving Venom Fusion Dragon using any materials in your GY.
(C) You can Fusion Summon Starving Venom Fusion Dragon using the effect of Odd-Eyes Fusion if you use 2 monsters in your Monster Zone as materials. However, you cannot Fusion Summon Starving Venom Fusion Dragon using any materials in your hand or Extra Deck.
(D) No, you cannot. You would need to use 2 DARK monsters on the field other than Tokens as materials, but there aren’t any monsters in your Deck that meet that condition. Consequently, you cannot even show Starving Venom Fusion Dragon with the first Standby Phase effect of Future Fusion.
(E) No, you cannot. You would need to use 2 DARK monsters on the field other than Tokens as materials, but there aren’t any monsters in your GY that meet that condition. Consequently, you cannot choose a Starving Venom Fusion Dragon in your GY when resolving the effect of Clock Lizard. (If Starving Venom Fusion Dragon is the only Fusion Monster in your GY, you cannot activate the effect of Clock Lizard.)
“Can I activate the second effect of a Linkuriboh if it was not successfully Link Summoned?”
Q: When attempting to Link Summon Linkuriboh, its Link Summon was negated due to the effect of Solemn Strike, and it was sent to the GY. After that, can the second effect of Linkuriboh that Special Summons it from the GY be activated?
A: It cannot be activated. In order to Special Summon a Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Monster from the GY or banishment, it must have been properly Special Summoned beforehand once.
For example, if any of the following monsters are sent to the GY or banished without having been properly Special Summoned, their effects that Special Summon them cannot be activated.
– Masquerade the Blazing Dragon
– Albion the Sanctifire Dragon
– Destiny End Dragoon
– Virtual World Kyubi – Shenshen
– Stardust Dragon
– Sangenpai Bident Dragion
– Sangenpai Transcendent Dragion
– Blaze, Supreme Ruler of all Dragons
– Gimmick Puppet Fantasix Machinix
– Maliss HEARTS OF CRYPTER

– Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames
– Scareclaw Light-Heart
– Link Decoder
– Linguriboh
“Can I Fusion Summon Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon using the effect of The Eye of Timaeus?”
Q: Can I Fusion Summon Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon using the effect of The Eye of Timaeus?
A: Yes, you can. Also, if you used the Normal Monster Dark Magician, the number of Normal Monsters used as material is 1, so you can activate the effect of Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon once per turn.
“If a monster to which the effect of Jinzo – Layered was applied is changed to face-down Defense Position, what happens to the applied effects?”
Q: I gained control of an opponent’s monster with the effect of Jinzo – Layered. If that monster I gained control of is then changed to face-down Defense Position, what happens to the applied effects?
A: The part of the effect that takes control of the monster until the End Phase still applies, but the part of the effect that prevents its effects from being activated or it from declaring an attack no longer applies. (You still keep control of that monster until the End Phase, but you can now activate its effects and declare attacks with it.)
“Does the activation of a Continuous Spell, Continuous Trap or a Field Spell Card count as activating a card effect?”
Q: When my opponent activates a Field Spell, Continuous Spell, or Continuous Trap, can I chain the effect of Ryzeal Deadnader that destroys a card on the field?
A: Yes, you can. Activating a Spell/Trap Card counts as activating a card effect. This also applies to the activation of a Continuous Spell, Continuous Trap, or Field Spell that does not apply any effect at the time the card is activated.
You can also activate the following effects when your opponent activates a Field Spell, Continuous Spell, or Continuous Trap:
– Sauravis, Dragon Sage of the Voiceless Voice
– Spright Carrot
– Mementoal Tecuhtlica – Combined Creation
– Dinomight Knight, the True Dracofighter
– Ignis Heat, the True Dracowarrior
– Majesty Maiden, the True Dracocaster

– Cosmic Blazar Dragon
– F.A. Dawn Dragster
– Evolzar Lars
– Varudras, the Final Bringer of the End Times
– Surgical Striker – S.P.E.C.T.R.A.
– A-to-Z Energy Load
– Red Zone
“Can I activate the second “●” effect of Eternal Favorite as the same Chain Link as the activation of the card itself?”
Q: I activated an Eternal Favorite that was Set in my Spell & Trap Zone. At this time, can I activate its second “●” effect as the same Chain Link?
A: No, you cannot. If you want to activate the effect of a Continuous Trap Card by sending it from your Spell & Trap Zone to the GY, you must activate the card beforehand.
The same applies to the effects of the following Continuous Trap Cards:
– Goblin Biker Grand Crisis
– Guardian of the Voiceless Voice
– Arbitration of White
– Recette de Personnel (Staff Recipe)
– Synchro Zone
– Crystal Brilliance
– Crystal Conclave
– Scareclaw Sclash

– Pride of the Plunder Patroll
– Ancient Warriors Saga – Defense of Changban
– Mathmech Induction
– Elemental Training
– Performapal Pinch Helper

– Vaylantz Wave – Master Phase
“When my opponent activates an effect that negates the Special Summon of a monster, can I activate the effect of PSY-Framegear Gamma?”
Q: While I control no monsters and am about to Special Summon a monster, my opponent activates the effect of Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended to negate the Special Summon and banish the monster. At this time, can I activate the effect of PSY-Framegear Gamma?
A: Yes, you can. Since your monster has not been successfully Special Summoned yet, it is not considered to be on the field. Therefore, the condition for activating the effect of PSY-Framegear Gamma, “while you control no monsters”, has been met.
“If Snowman Eater is returned to the Deck by the effect of Ehren, Lightsworn Monk, does its effect activate?”
Q: My Ehren, Lightsworn Monk attacks a face-down Defense Position Snowman Eater. In this case, although the flipped Snowman Eater is returned to the Deck by the effect of Ehren, Lightsworn Monk before damage calculation, will the effect of Snowman Eater activate? Also, what happens if Drillroid attacks a face-down Defense Position Snowman Eater?
A: The effect will not activate in either case. The effect of Snowman Eater only activates if it is face-up in the Monster Zone after damage calculation. Therefore, if it leaves the Monster Zone before damage calculation due to the effects of Ehren, Lightsworn Monk or Drillroid, its effect will not activate.
“What happens if the effects of Dimensional Barrier or Retaliating “C” are applying when The Hallowed Azamina resolves?”
Q: What happens if I activate The Hallowed Azamina, but my opponent chains Dimensional Barrier and prevents either player from Special Summoning Fusion Monsters? Also, what happens if my opponent chains the effect of Retaliating “C” instead?
A: If the effect of Dimensional Barrier has been applied, Fusion Monsters cannot be Special Summoned, so the effect of The Hallowed Azamina is not applied. Also, if the effect “any card sent to the GY is banished instead” has been applied as a result of the effect of Retaliating “C” being chained, you still reveal 1 “Azamina” Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, and you must banish 1 “Sinful Spoils” card from your hand or field for every 4 Levels the revealed monster has. Since no “Sinful Spoils” cards were sent from the hand or field to the GY as a result, the revealed Fusion Monster remains in your Extra Deck without being Special Summoned.
“What happens if a face-down Defense Position Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir is attacked?”
Q: A Normal Monster attacks a face-down Defense Position Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir. Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir is flipped face-up before damage calculation, so what happens to the battle?
A: The attacking monster is changed to Defense Position and the battle ends. Damage calculation does not occur.
“If a face-up monster I gained control of with the effect of Mind Control is changed to face-down Defense Position, what happens to the applied effects?”
Q: I gained control of an opponent’s face-up monster with the effect of Mind Control. If that monster I gained control of is then changed to face-down Defense Position, what happens to the applied effects?
A: The part of the effect that takes control of the monster until the End Phase still applies, but the part of the effect that prevents it from being Tributed or declaring an attack no longer applies. (You still keep control of that monster until the End Phase, but you can now Tribute it and declare attacks with it.)
Also, if you gain control of a face-down Defense Position monster with the effect of Mind Control, the part of the effect preventing that monster from being Tributed or declaring an attack is still applied. (Even if that monster is flipped face-up later, it still cannot be Tributed or declare an attack while it is face-up in your Monster Zone.)
“When Chaotic Allure Queen applies its own effect, does it gain an effect from Allure Palace?”
Q: I activated the second effect of Chaotic Allure Queen, and equipped it with Light Dragon @Ignister. In this case, although its card name is now treated as Light Dragon @Ignister, will it still gain the effect “● You can send this card equipped with a card(s) by its own effect to the GY; Special Summon 1 Spellcaster monster with 1500 or less ATK from your hand or Deck” from Allure Palace?
A: That effect cannot be activated. The Chaotic Allure Queen whose name is treated as Light Dragon @Ignister is no longer an “Allure Queen” monster, and is no longer affected by that effect of Allure Palace.
Similarly, the following effects will no longer apply to Chaotic Allure Queen if it is not treated as an “Allure Queen” monster:
– The effect of Allure Dance, “Each “Allure Queen” monster you control gains ATK equal to the ATK of the monsters equipped to it by its own effect.”
– The effect of Golden Allure Queen, “also “Allure Queen” monsters you control cannot be destroyed by card effects for the rest of this turn.”
“If the Special Summon of Ex Ryzeal is negated, when can the effect of Mereologic Aggregator that was sent to the GY for the Special Summon be activated?”
Q: I sent Mereologic Aggregator from my Extra Deck to the GY to Special Summon Ex Ryzeal using its own effect. At that time, if my opponent activates the effect of Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended to negate the Special Summon as Chain Link 1, when can I activate the effect of Mereologic Aggregator that negates the effects of a face-up card on the field?
A: After Ex Ryzeal has its Special Summon negated and is banished, if there is a face-up card on the field, you can activate the effect of Mereologic Aggregator as Chain Link 1 and target that card.
“Can I Special Summon Horus the Black Flame Deity with the effect of Krishnerd Witch?”
Q: When I activate either effect of Walls of the Imperial Tomb, whose name is treated as King’s Sarcophagus, I chain the third effect of Krishnerd Witch. When resolving this effect, can I Special Summon Horus the Black Flame Deity, which mentions King’s Sarcophagus, instead of returning it to the Deck?
A: No, you cannot. (Similarly, you cannot Special Summon Imsety, Glory of Horus, Qebehsenuef, Protection of Horus, Duamutef, Blessing of Horus, or Hapi, Guidance of Horus.) King’s Sarcophagus is a Continuous Spell Card, so it is not a Field Spell Card’s name.
“Can I Special Summon Warrior of Atlantis with the effect of Krishnerd Witch?”
Q: When I activate the effects of Lemuria, the Forgotten City or Magellanica, the Deep Sea City, I chain the third effect of Krishnerd Witch. When resolving this effect, can I Special Summon Warrior of Atlantis instead of returning it to the Deck?
A: No, you cannot.
Ruling Reversals
Ruling changes that have occurred this month, as indicated by the above updates:
1. Activating multiple copies of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing on the same Chain.
Previous Ruling: You cannot reveal the same Level 1 monster when activating multiple copies of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing on the same Chain. (The monster remains revealed until the effect resolves, so the already-revealed monster cannot be used to pay the cost of another copy on the same Chain.)
New Ruling: You can reveal the same Level 1 monster when activating multiple copies of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing on the same Chain. (The monster is revealed for the activation cost and then stops being revealed as soon as the cost is performed, as with other effects that reveal for cost such as “Vanquish Soul” monsters.)
2. Face-down monsters with “?” ATK/DEF.
Previous Ruling: The printed ATK/DEF of “?” is considered undefined while a monster is in face-down Defense Position.
New Ruling: The printed ATK/DEF of “?” is treated as 0 while a monster is in face-down Defense Position (as it is while face-up). The printed ATK/DEF of “?” is still considered undefined if a monster is somewhere other than the field.
3. Changing monsters to face-down Defense Position while an effect continuously changes control of them.
Previous Ruling: If a monster is changed to face-down Defense Position while an effect that continuously changes control of that monster is applying (such as Snatch Steal), it will not return to the original controller.
New Ruling: If a monster is changed to face-down Defense Position while an effect that continuously changes control of that monster is applying (such as Snatch Steal), it will immediately return to the original controller.
4. Changing monsters to face-down Defense Position while a temporary control-changing effect applies other effects to that monster.
Previous Ruling: If a monster is changed to face-down Defense Position while an effect temporarily takes control of it, any other effects applied to that monster by that effect (such as the attacking/activation restrictions of Jinzo – Layered) are not removed until the entire effect stops applying during the End Phase.
New Ruling: If a monster is changed to face-down Defense Position while an effect temporarily takes control of it, any other effects applied to that monster by that effect (such as the attacking/activation restrictions of Jinzo – Layered) are immediately removed. However, control of the monster is still maintained normally until the effect stops applying during the End Phase.

oh okay we’re just suddenly completely changing how setting monsters you’ve taken control of with card effects works now for no reason
it’s cause they brought back snatch steal
using BoM on the monster you snatch steal to keep it even after the equip leaves the field was a play
so, no, this isn’t because of Snatch Steal, it’s literally anti-Snatch Steal, and even screws up rogue strats like Graydles which had been doing the same thing for years
there is no reason for konami to apply these changes, and there’ll be no going back once these rulings hit MD rendering even more retro format interactions impossible
The reason they changed is because how they functioned didn’t make any sense. Why does there need to be a reason beyond that? There is no reason why you should still control them when the effect that allowed you to do so no longer exists. That’s generally why ruling reversals happen at all, to make things consistent with how the rest of the game works.
Props to Konami for making flipping face-down even more complex!
Well the time machine worked.
