I still don’t know why they didn’t just call it Archfiend of Talwar instead of needlessly making that archetype clause. We have Skull Archfiend of Lightning for decades now.
Because it’s a reference to the original card.
It’s still outdated, though. We had “Red-Eyes B. Dragon” for 20 years before they finally errata’d it, and it wasn’t even necessary. So why don’t they just rename “Beast of Talwar” too? Heck, I’d go a step further and say they should rename “Summoned Skull” to “Summoned Archfiend”. It would remove the need for the absurd text in its retrains “this card’s name is treated as Summoned Skull, but it is still considered an Archfiend.”
Summoned Skull is too iconic. The names is on all kinds of merchandise as an OG ace of Yugi. That’s the big reason that original card doesn’t get a name change.
Beast of Talwar is not iconic that way. Skull Archfiend of Lightning was Summoned Skulls first retrain released why Archfiends became an archetype and the retrain kept the Archfiend word in the name for TCG. This is also the first Talwar retrain, Beast was released before Archfiend was an archetype so it shares that excuse with Summoned Skull. But there has been FAR MORE Archfiend support in the years between the original Talwar release and the new one than between Summoned Skull and Skull Archfiend of Lightning. So it makes no sense that they kept Beast in the name and wasted ink on an archetype clause.

Dan, yes. Talwar is a “Daemo”n card- the OCG word for the “Archfiend” archetype. So it should have just been changed to Archfiend of Talwar in the retrain like when Summoned Skull got its first retrain – Skull Archfiend of Lightning. There is no logical excuse for why they continued using Beast and wasted ink on an unnecessary archetype clause instead of just using the Archfiend word in the name.
Summoned Skull is too iconic, but Red-Eyes isn’t?
Red-Eyes didn’t really change its name. The B. already stood for Black and the anime already called it Black instead of just saying the letter B. Everyone already referred to and knew it as Red-Eyes Black Dragon as the iconic name.
