Unleash Nightmare Pain with Yubel and crew!

    Replays:

    Strategic Summary:

Continuing the trend this month of showcasing themes that received recent support, I’m coming back to the Yubel archetype! If you missed my first take that focused on the PHNI cards, check that out here first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drNJEnKSR78

In addition to many of the plays and combos that I mentioned during the initial video, the Yubel strategy has gotten a few more tools to play with in the upcoming LEDE set, so let’s talk about those! First up is Infernal Grave Squirmer (YGOrg Translation), a Level 1 DARK Fiend that can Special Summon itself while you control a Fiend monster, then destroy 1 monster you control that is Yubel or mentions it. While of course this can be used to trigger your Yubel effects to summon the next evolution, this is mainly useful for its second effect, which lets you banish it from the GY to Special Summon 1 Fiend monster with 0 ATK/DEF from your hand or GY. What exactly would this include? Well, this includes Yubel, Spirit of Yubel, or even your Yubel – The Loving Defender Forever, if your opponent manages to get it off the board. Both effects also combo well with Mature Chronicle – racking up those Counters can really make a difference in getting to your copies of Super Polymerization! As for the second new card, it’s a Field Spell in the form of Nightmare Throne (YGOrg Translation). When activated, it tutors any Fiend with 0 ATK/DEF, meaning your Yubels, Squirmer, Samsara Regenerating Lotus, or even Dark Beckoning Beast. Beast works great at tutoring Opening of the Spirit Gates, when then allows you to infinitely recover your Continuous Spells while you control a Level 10 monster, like Yubel! The Field Spell also has a second effect, letting you recover or tutor, then Special Summon, a new Yubel monster from the hand when one leaves the field. This just adds an extra layer of deterrence, as even if your opponent banishes your Spirit of Yubel, you’ll still be able to Special Summon a copy of Yubel – Terror Incarnate!

While those new cards just added consistency to the deck, it actually makes the Yubel theme one of the grindiest out there. You see, the gameplan of winning with Nightmare Pain is still solid – plop that down with a Yubel monster, and your opponent will be forced to attack and take damage from the battle. Or, use it on your turn to aggressively attack into an opponent’s monster. If your opponent is being a bit sheepish on committing to the field, you can even turn to Nightmare Archfiends, a Normal Trap that summons 3 2000 ATK Tokens to their board. Even if your opponent uses them for a Link Summon, they’ll still be forced to attack into your Yubel monster. You can also employ Dirge of the Lost Dragon to punish your opponent for activating a specific card, halving their LP in the process and bringing you one step closer to victory via Pain. Ascend the throne with the help of Yubel and their new support suite!
