Strategic Summary:
Welcome back for another CDP on new archetypes, this time focused on the new Valmonica theme from the newest Deck Build Pack. The Valmonica archetype consists of two Level 4 Pendulum monsters, one LIGHT/Fiend and one DARK/Fairy, and two Link Monsters. For each of the Pendulums, Angelo Valmonica (YGOrg Translation) and Demone Valmonica (YGOrg Translation), they can set themselves and the other in your Pendulum Zones by discarding another card. Additionally, while the other is in the other Pendulum Zone, they can gain a Counter whenever you gain LP or take effect damage, respectively. These counters are essential, as you can only Link Summon either Link Monster when you have 3 Counters on a Valmonica in your Pendulum Zone of the same Type. For the links, the payoff is pretty worth it. Divine Oddity of Valmonica – Zebufera (YGOrg Translation) can copy the effect of a Valmonica Spell/Trap in your GY during your opponent’s turn, and Odd Deity of Valmonica – Giruarme (YGOrg Translation) gets to destroy monsters the opponent controls up to the number of Counters in your Pendulum Zones. As for how to gain these important Counters, that’s where you turn to each of the Spell cards for the gimmick, as each includes an effect that gains you 500 LP or that makes you take 500 dmg, that you can choose from as long as you have a Valmonica in a Pendulum Zone.
Speaking of these Spell/Traps, let me shine a spotlight on a few. Valmonica Scelta (YGOrg Translation) gives you the choice to return a card from the hand to the bottom of the Deck and draw 2 cards OR you can tutor any other Valmonica Spell/Trap. Valmonica Versare (YGOrg Translation) gives you the choice to excavate cards from the top of your deck until you find a Valmonica card to add to hand OR you can send any Valmonica card from your Deck to the GY. For the Traps, these let you pick an effect or apply both if you already control a Valmonica Link Monster. Valmonica of the Guiding Rhythm (YGOrg Translation) destroys a S/T on the field AND/OR returns a monster on the field to the hand, while Valmonica of the Selecting Melody (YGOrg Translation) prevents Valmonica from being targeted AND/OR negates the effects of an opponent’s monster.
With all of these new cards in play, let’s talk about the rest of today’s build and how I built the rest of the deck around the archetype. In a way, this archetype is perfect at letting me modernize the Clown-Blade strategy of yesteryear, which focused on abusing the effect of Performage Trick Clown with Heroic Challenger – Thousand Blades, as you could quickly enter loops of endless Rank 4 Xyz material. While we have the Valmonica Link monsters as a win condition here, it’s still appreciated to benefit from all the effect damage you’ll be taking from Valmonica effects. Joining Trick Clown here is a few other Performage monsters, like Performage Damage Juggler, the best thing to send to the GY to set your Valmonica scales, and Performage Mirror Conductor, for another way to take 500 damage at will. This brings us to the last major engine of the deck, the Synchron engine. Consisting of Tuning, Assault Synchron, and Revolution Synchron, this deck uses either Tuner with your horde of Level 4 monsters to advance your gameplan via Synchros. If you have Assault Synchron, turn that and a Level 4 into Blackwing – Boreastorm the Wicked Wind to send Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite to the GY, because that’ll earn you 2 Counters for taking effect damage. If you have Revolution Synchron, turn that into Ancient Fairy Dragon (then Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon), tutoring a Therion Discolosseum and Therion “King” Regulus along the way while you gain 1000 LP and a Counter! This deck is all about optimizing resources and playing the long game, so choose to live on with the Valmonica!
