Strategic Summary:
Welcome to the first in a series of CDPs, designed to showcase a variety of rogue builds under the new format now that the overall power level of the game has been dropped a touch. First up is something I've been using IRL, and that's Pumpking! If you missed my prior Pumpking list, be sure to check that out to here all about what this theme does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJAexIyF0K8 .Now that you're back, let's talk about why Pumpking could be attractive in the new format. First, it has a variety of excellent one-card combos, that allow you to build fairly solid half-boards against Mulcharmy Fuwalos, that are also fairly insulated from the primary hand traps of the new format. Second, it also happens to be insulated from common boardbreakers, such as Lava Golem or The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode, that are commonly found in side decks across the gambit lately. But most of all, this deck can still put up fearsome boards with 5 negates and multiple other interuptions, all off of opening a sole copy of Pumpking, the King of Grave Ghosts.
As you'll see in the last replay, the point of the combo is to use Zombie support to search Call of the Forgotten, then get to a copy of Spright Sprind to send Plaguespreader Zombie to the GY. Then Plague and Sprind can overlay into Gigantic Spright, which summons Swap Frog from the deck, which in turn gets you to 2 Level 2 Aqua monsters to make Toadally Awesome. Then, close out your play by activating Forgotten and setting 3 Call of the Haunted. Since Toadally is not a hard once-per turn, you end up with a Toadally that can negate an opponent's card/effect, then get summoned back up to 3 more times to do the same thing due to your 3 copies of Call of the Haunted. Combine that with the other disruptions offered by The Undying Legion, Deadly Zombie Breath, and Officiator of Doom Samuel, and you have yourself a solid disruption-based strategy, that can un-brick itself with Plaguespreader... Or if you 'brick' hard enough to get Swap Frog and a second WATER monster, that allows for you to just get Toadally out first, before going into the rest of your plays! As a fun fact, I actually topped my most recent locals with this exact build, so if you're looking for something unique for the new format, maybe the spooky choice is right for you!
