CDP: Nurse Burn Darklord, January 2024

Strategic Summary:

It’s your turn on the exam table, as I’m taking on the Nurse Burn strategy in 2024! The goal of this deck’s gameplan is simple – abuse the effect of either Darklord Nurse Reficule or Bad Reaction to Simochi to turn any LP that your opponent would gain into direct damage. It just happens that we got a gift with the latest F/L list in three copies of Upstart Goblin – the perfect dose of Draw a card and burn your opponent for 1000 dmg. Combine that with the best draw card for burn decks, Pot of Desires, and you will literally be on cloud nine with all of the burn damage at your disposal.

For a bit of an aside on the math of this deck, any burn deck wants to be able to win with the 5 cards in hand. So on average, each of the 5 cards needs to be able to deal 1600 apiece. While you will need your Darklord Nurse to deal most of the damage in this deck, you have Gift Card and Tri-and-Guess that each will inflict 3000, and then you have The Paths of Destiny, Ichiroku’s Leger Book, and Gravedigger’s Trap Hole that each can deal 2000. Oh, and each one of those options is also accessible through Trap Trick. As a result, any combination of these cards, plus a Nurse, gives you game-ending damage, and that’s even easier with every Upstart you resolve. Nurse is extremely accessible as well – whether hard drawing through Desires, excavating for it with Pot of Duality, or simply tutoring a copy with the effect of Banishment of the Darklords, this deck has access to that. So yes, this burn deck is extremely efficient.

That said, there are a few scenarios you have to be mindful of, which I tried to model in a couple of the replays. First, you need to avoid dropping all your burn cards when your opponent can drop a surprise Infinite Impermanence from their hand. Second, you may need to stall for time, which is where Dinomorphia Shell comes in. Between its 3000 DEF and the ability to be banished from the GY to prevent battle damage, this card can quite literally give you a second life. Lastly, this is a cheesy burn deck, so if you do choose to play it, please prepare for the rage. I recommend bringing an empty bottle to collect the tears of your opponents.
