Picking up the Mitsurugi strategy?
Replays:
Strategic Summary:
Today’s CDP is a celebration of the most competitive archetype out of the recent Legendary Modern Decks product that released to the TCG, as we are celebrating our dear Mitsurugi archetype. This Reptile-based Ritual theme loves to trigger effects when Tributed, while also generating absurd amounts of material with which you can do a whole variety of plays, all off of a single copy of Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi. Instead of walking through the basic combos, today I’m going to talk about how I’ve built this to enhance their pure inherent strengths, rather than splice them with other themes (I’m looking at you Yummy).
First off, the Mitsurugi primary combo gets you multiple Level 8 monsters and multiple Level 4 monsters, so the Xyz toolkit is my first spot to highlight. I am a huge proponent of using Divine Golden Shadow Dragon Dragluxion as your primary R8NK, since it turns into Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy, while also putting your two Level 8 Mitsurugi material back into the GY. While I’m not making use of its search effect, keep in mind that you can do so, such as running a copy of Galaxy Journey, for extra reocvery. As far as the Level 4s, I’ve turned to a combination of Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir, for stalling, as well as a copy of Evilswarm Exciton Knight, not only for its ability to destroy the field, but also because it can enable the small Fiendsmith package to access D/D/D Wave High King Caesar, a great endboard piece that can also provide insulation from Nibiru.
Beyond these Extra Deck engines, Mitsurugi doesn’t naturally need a lot of space, therefore I’ve found room to include a The Fallen & The Virtuous engine, as well as a playset of Dominus Impulse backed by Infinite Impermanence. While these some of these side options aren’t necessarily found in the Legendary Modern Decks product, they are a great way to add additional capabilities and disruption to your deck, without loosing too much consistency. Similarly, I’m a huge fan of the Triple Tactics Thrust, Triple Tactics Talents, and The Black Goat Laughs in here, as your opponent will most likely need to use their hand traps to prevent you from building a strong board, exposing a weakness for you to exploit. Undeterred, Mitsurugi can make quite a difficult board to break, especially when backed by their in-theme disruption of Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi and Mitsurugi Great Purification! To get ahead of the unavoidable critique – this may not have been the most ‘creative’ or groundbreaking of CDPs, but I wanted to celebrate the release of a truly great product to the TCG. If you want something different, just check back next time for my take on a hot FTK strategy!
