{"id":100926,"date":"2024-01-08T05:42:34","date_gmt":"2024-01-08T10:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ygorganization.com\/?p=100926"},"modified":"2024-01-08T05:42:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T10:42:34","slug":"whats-in-a-name-raika-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ygorganization.com\/staging\/?p=100926","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s In A Name: &#8220;Raika&#8221; Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, I was asked to do a more complete examination of the Raika theme&#8217;s names.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First off we stuck with the group&#8217;s names being in Japanese because they are extremely Ye Olde sounding Japanese with how they&#8217;re written. \u30ce like this only really shows up in really archaic and outdated names, which is about the best way I can explain this is this stuff is supposed to have pre-Sengoku era Japanese naming conventions.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, highly Japanese theme, aesthetics wise, with extensive Homonym wordplay. I don&#8217;t doubt the TCG staff will probably localize these to like &#8220;Dreadbloom &#8211; Sickleviper&#8221;, but that isn&#8217;t our job, especially when the theme is this Japanese in flavor.<\/p>\n<p>The theme itself is \u857e\u798d (\u30e9\u30a4\u30ab) Raika, which itself is a fabricated term, meaning literally Budding Calamities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/r2.ygorganization.com\/2024\/01\/1833_20231215034511_img_1_DwpeAQtSEa4QX6wHJBRch0D9PjVBRwAVipzg4iw86pMRl8Yv7oLdcOcpxwqEipXF.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-100912\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ygorganization.com\/2024\/01\/1833_20231215034511_img_1_DwpeAQtSEa4QX6wHJBRch0D9PjVBRwAVipzg4iw86pMRl8Yv7oLdcOcpxwqEipXF-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ygorganization.com\/2024\/01\/1833_20231215034511_img_1_DwpeAQtSEa4QX6wHJBRch0D9PjVBRwAVipzg4iw86pMRl8Yv7oLdcOcpxwqEipXF-206x300.jpg?wsr 206w, https:\/\/cdn.ygorganization.com\/2024\/01\/1833_20231215034511_img_1_DwpeAQtSEa4QX6wHJBRch0D9PjVBRwAVipzg4iw86pMRl8Yv7oLdcOcpxwqEipXF-150x219.jpg?wsr 150w, https:\/\/cdn.ygorganization.com\/2024\/01\/1833_20231215034511_img_1_DwpeAQtSEa4QX6wHJBRch0D9PjVBRwAVipzg4iw86pMRl8Yv7oLdcOcpxwqEipXF.jpg?wsr 407w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Level 1 monster \u6bec\u9996 (\u30de\u30ea\u30b3\u30a6\u30d9) Marikoube is a play on two things, it appears. The first is the obvious reference to Kamikiri, the Japanese name of the long-horned beetle. But as Satch noted, the other half of the name reference is Yahazukiri, a lightning fast sword swing, hence the monster being a soldier drawing his sword. First is to \u30ab\u30de\u30ad\u30ea, the Japanese name of the Praying Mantis, referenced by its general design and double headed scythe. The name wording and the Kanji seems to infer its name is based on \u5927\u795e\u4e3b, a powerful or great Shinto Priest.<\/p>\n<p>However, Eva notes this card is likely also referencing Ookuninushi, an important god in the myth cycle written down in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, the two classic and most cited sources of Japanese history. Visually the monster seems to be based on the Daioh Hirata Kuwagata, better known in the west as &#8220;Dorcus bucephalus&#8221;.
